“He’s not just people, he’s myfamily.” Josh frowns. “Of course it’s my business. And if I was in his place, I’d want him to do the same thing for me.”

“But he didn’t ask you to, did he?” I put my hands on my hips, angry now. Avery has been teetering on the verge of a nervous breakdown with all these wedding mishaps, and he’s been out heretryingto humiliate her? “In fact, I bet if you said all this to your uncle’s face, he’d politely tell you to butt the hell out.”

Josh’s face changes.

“He already did, didn’t he?” I exclaim.

“She’s got him wrapped around her finger,” Josh argues. “He’s not thinking straight. And why are you so invested, anyway? You barely know the woman.”

“I know Avery cares about Robert,” I argue, “and I made her a promise. She hired me to make this wedding perfect!”

“Yeah, but you’ll get paid either way,” Josh says dismissively, and I burn with defiance.

“There’s only one way this wedding is going: straight down the aisle to say ‘I do’.”

“We’ll see about that.” Josh rakes his messy hair back, and exhales. “Look, let’s not fight about this. Not when there are better things to do.” He shoots me a devilish smile, beckoning me back to bed, and I can only stand there, gaping at him in disbelief.

“Seriously?”

“What’s the problem?” Josh looks bemused, and it’s the final straw.

“You’re the lawyer. You figure it out!” I glare, before turning on my (bare) heel, grabbing my purse, and stalking out – almost bumping straight into the hotel staff bringing our room service.

“Wrong place,” I tell them loudly, shooting a final look of disdain back at Josh. “I’ll be eating in my room, over there. Yes, all of it.”

And then I slam the door behind me and go to eat my cheeseburger alone.

JOSH

I wake up alone, which is the first problem.

When you have sex like that with a woman like Hazel, you want to open your eyes the morning after and find her laying in your arms: sleepy, and satisfied, and ready to go another round all over again. Instead, she’s nowhere to be seen.

I haul myself out of bed, hungry and in a bad mood – which are problems number two and three. How did such a perfect mind-blowing night suddenly fall apart? One minute, we’re having the kind of wild, filthy sex that changes a man’s life forever, and the next, she’s storming off in a huff – and taking all the damn room service with her.

I don’t understand it. She’s not even close with Avery! Hazel just came out here to cash an easy check, and relax in the sun. If the wedding is called off, it makes no difference to her real career. But somehow, pointing out that my uncle would be better off with a woman who really loves him – and not just his flashy Hollywood contacts – makes me some kind of villain.

She’s wrong.

I shower and dress, then head up to the main resort to grab some breakfast. The dining pavilion is already busy when I arrive, so I fill a plate from the groaning buffet, and look around for a free table.

And also any sign of Hazel.

“She’s off planning some wedding events for the day,” Reeve materializes beside me, munching on an apple.

“Who is?” I play dumb, but the man just gives me an amused smirk.

“Hazel’s the same way: absolutely zero poker face.”

He follows me to a table, and sprawls in a chair, munching his apple and watching the rest of the guests mingle. “So, New York,” he says casually.

“Yup.”

“Single?”

“Uh huh.”
