Jet: I don’t think I’ve noticed the blue of the sky at twilight. I’m gonna check tonight

I sucked my lips to prevent a smile spreading across my face, feeling ridiculously pleased with his compliment.

Me: Is yours really Kawasaki green?

Jet: Haha how about second fave? My fave is boring. It’s cream—not the food, but the colour of a fleece you’ve shorn off with no nicks on the animal and the fleece is just perfect and of the finest quality. That cream colour is just perfect when you’ve been slaving away for a long, hot day in the shearing shed

Me: that’s strangely beautiful. Even if cream isn’t really a colour *winky face emoji*

Jet: you’re going to diss my moment here? *insert smiley face*

Jet: right now tho, gotta say amber is my fave colour because I’m about to pull beers at the pub and then crack open some cold ones when I get home.

Jet: I sheared for the Turner family for their winter clip. Ryan the bartender is my boss now at the pub

An image of Jet, sweat glistening arms and chest, came to me in a flash. I let out a slow breath.

Me: that’s great tho. Lots of extra cash to get your place set up.

We hadn’t just spent the afternoon and night having sex in my van. Jet told me more about travelling around Australia for shearing jobs and his plans to do up his grandfather’s house over winter and buy some ewes in a couple of months.

When I told him about my road trip plans, he never dissuaded me; he just listened and supported my ideas.

Jet: Absolutely. Money from shifts at the pub keeps my bills paid.

Me: You’ll meet plenty of women working there too. You know, to find true love

The bubbles kept moving and disappearing. My stomach lurched. Maybe I needed more car snacks.

Jet: the pub, farm work and shearing take up all my time. Think I’ll leave off looking for true love right now.

I felt pleased reading his text. Which also left me feeling immediately unsettled.

Jet: speaking of work … I’m working right now. Can’t be texting on the job

Me: gotta go too. Searching for a caravan park

Jet: talk soon, Little Miss Wilde

I looked up from my phone and saw myself reflected in the service station’s glass doors. I was grinning like an idiot.
