“Mum’s cards worked.” I kissed him, barely ghosting my lips over his. “I fell in love, one question at a time.”

Sweet or Spicy: Who is your favourite book boyfriend?

Riding a motorbike for twenty minutes with an erection is a special kind of torture. Convincing Ari that she should drive another twenty minutes to see my place was worth the pain.

Ari was right behind me in Bessie, parking in my driveway. And now, facing the front door, with her at my side, key in the lock, I started to panic.

“Just … wait. Right there.”Fuck, she was really here. “Don’t move.”

Would she like my place? Was it clean?

“Can I come inside?” she called.

Checked the fruit bowl—ugh, the banana was more black than yellow. Chucked it. “Nope! Just. Wait. A little longer.” Wiped the bench. No flies. Good.

“Can I come in now?” Ari laughed from the front door.

“Soon, very soon.” Covered the dirty dishes with a tea towel.

“Meow.”

“You have a cat?” Ari shrieked.

“Reluctantly.”

“You never told me!”

“Turned up the day after you?—”

“I kinda broke up with you?”

Ari was now at the kitchen door, with the cat wrapping herself around her legs.

“Yeah.” I gripped the kitchen bench.

“I’m sorry.”

All I could do was nod. Ari was an apparition. A fantasy. “Are you really here?”

Surely I was dreaming. I’d made up the whole thing at speed dating and then making out in her van, and then deciding to take things to my house. All a big dream and I would wake up any second.

Ari crossed the kitchen to stand before me. “I’m really here. I promise.”

“For good?” Ari flinched. “I’m sorry. I didn’t mean?—”

“I am here for good.”

I clutched the benchtop with a white-knuckle grip. If I let go, I would pull her to me and?—

“You’re not making this fair,” she murmured, breaking me out of my head.

“What do you?—”

Ari ran her fingers down my arm, and I shuddered, my resolve weakening.
