“The ex, Wes.”

I nodded and then shook it. “Wes isn’t an excuse either. Nor is too much wine on an empty stomach. I’m a lightweight, and I was an idiot for not eating. Why would you still be here after how I behaved?”

“Thought I made it clear I’m not an arsehole, Ari.” Jet frowned. “I stayed to make sure you were okay, and, well, I fell asleep too. I swear you’re a human blanket because you’d only sleep if you were on top of me. I ended up trapped.”

I snorted, my eyes falling on his biceps. We both knew he was not trapped under five foot four, little ol’ me.

My stomach growled. He dusted his hands off and headed to the van’s door.

“Breakfast? I know you’ve got eggs, six slices of bread and a dribble of milk in your fridge. Could make French toast, if you like. Then I’ll head off.”

“You cook?”

“No need to sound so surprised. And you should have enough milk for coffee too. If you have coffee. I searched and couldn’t find any.”

My stomach groaned again. “You can wash up in the house,” I offered weakly.

The least I could do was let him use a tap and some soap.

“Got bathroom sorted. And kitchen. Your sister showed me.”

Of course Ash did.My jaw fell open. How easily he’d made himself at home while I’d been sleeping off the wine.

“Or I can leave now.” Jet then grinned. “But I’d need my shirt back. If you’d like to just take it off?”

I hugged myself and sniffed. “Breakfast would be nice. And coffee is in the house.”

He smirked and strode towards the back door.

“Hey, Jet.” He looked at me over his shoulder. “Thank you. For last night.”

“Anytime, Ari.” He smiled and disappeared into the house.

Cupcake: What is the meaning behind your name?

Igroaned under the stream of hot water in the shower, scrubbing away the sourness of last night’s wine. As I washed my hair with Ash’s shampoo, something occurred to me. There was no way Jet could have been shown around the house by my sister. Cody had taken her for a weekend getaway at the beach.

They’d left yesterday morning.

I’d caught Jet out with his lie.

The smell of eggs and butter wafted under the door as I turned off the water. I was out in two minutes, hair wrapped in a towel and ready to eat—and confront him.

Jet was now wearing a tee shirt from a Canadian ice hockey team—one of Cody’s.

“That belongs to Cody.”

“Your sister said it was okay.” He flipped the French toast in a skillet.

“My sister is away with Cody.”

Jet frowned. “But Debra was here this morning when I got up.”

Oh, Mum. “What? Debra is not my sister. She’s my mum.”
