“Jake? They’ll take him over to urgent care.”

“No, what will they do to Lincoln?”

“Don’t ask. Just know you’ll never have to worry about him again.” she answers.

For the first time in almost two years, I feel like I can breathe again.

This means I can go home.

Oh God, I can go home.

But do I want to?

Chapter 11

Cass

At the hospital, thedoctors are told that someone slipped something into Jake’s drink at the bar to try to minimize the questions.

The doctor on call kept the nurses from calling the cops and I figured he’s friends in some kind of way with the Midnight Sons.

For the next several hours, Jake wakes up for only minutes at a time. Each time, he grabs my hand refusing to let go.

Not that I’m going to leave his side anyway. Not until I know he can leave and the drugs are completely out of his system.

“You should go home. Get some sleep. He’ll be right as rain in the morning with a slight headache.” The night nurse tells me when she comes in to change his saline bag.

“I’m not leaving until he can go home.”

“Okay. Well, that chair you’re in folds out like a recliner. I’ll bring you some blankets so you can at least try to sleep a little.” She smiles kindly before leaving out the door again.

Pulling the chair closer to Jake’s bed, I lean back in it as it reclines, never letting go of his hand. Closing my eyes, I’m asleep in seconds.

“Cass?” I hear my name being called.

Opening my eyes, I realize it’s morning by the sun glaring through the window. Quickly looking over at Jake, I see him smiling back at me.
