“How do you feel?” I ask, leaning closer to his side.

“Like I’ve been hit with a side kick to the head more than a few times.” He winces.

“Yeah, they told me last night you’d have a killer headache this morning. Want me to get the nurse to bring you something for it?”

“She just did a few minutes before I woke you.”

“I slept through that?” I ask, looking around confused as he chuckles at me.

“You seemed to be exhausted.” He answers.

“I must have been since I feel like I had the best sleep ever even though I was in that chair. Did she mention when you might be getting out of here?”

“Soon as she gets back with the discharge papers, we can go.”

Cass stays close tome for the next several days, even though the doctor said that another day of rest would be all that is needed.

Finding out that all this time, she’s been running and hiding from someone has me completely antsy with wanting to know what her next move is going to be.

I don’t know much about her life from before she came to Alaska. Does she have family or friends back in California that she wants to get back to? I’m truly afraid of what her answers might be.

I’m so completely in love with this woman. It took me years to find someone like her.

Someone I felt completely myself with and didn’t have to worry about whether I was taking her to all the right clubs every evening. Cass is perfectly happy just staying in to watch a movie on the couch.

“Hey, you’re gonna burn that hamburger if you don’t flip it.” Her voice carries over to me from the back sliding glass door.

Looking down, I see that she’s right and hurry to flip them before the charcoal flames up underneath it.

“What would I do without you?” I smile over at her.

Her own smile fades a little before she catches herself and walks over, slipping her arms around my waist.

“I’m gonna have to go back, you know. Sometime soon anyway. There’s some stuff to take care of like getting my stuff from the house.”
