“You okay?” I ask, looking around to see what could have happened and reaching to help her off the ground.

“I’m fine!”

“What the fuck?” Baratta growls from the door, moving quickly towards his woman.

“I’m fine! I swear!” She tries to push him off as he looks her over thoroughly.

“What happened?” He asks, looking at me but I shrug.

“I was trying to get the other tables.” She huffs, pointing up to the loft.

“You fell from the fucking loft?” Baratta and I both yell at the same time.

“No, morons! The fucking ladder broke!” She points down at the offending object that once was attached to the loft above our heads.

The thing is old and should have been replaced already. Looking at it closer, I can see she only made it to the third step when it broke so she didn’t fall very far but it could still have caused damage.

“Should I call Sara?” I ask, reaching for my phone. Sara is a nurse and works over at the hospital full time now.

“Absolutely not! She is not going to learn about this damn party until the surprise! You got it?” Fiona jabs her finger into my chest. “Now, help me get those tables.”

“Where’s the prospects that were supposed to be doing this?” I ask, grabbing the new ladder from the back corner.

“I sent them to put out all the chairs. I figured I could get these tables on my own.”

“You could have been hurt.” Baratta growls once again.

“Why didn’t you get this one instead of climbing on that old ass ladder?” I ask.

“I didn’t know it was back there and that one...” she points to the wooden one, “looked like it could still hold me.”

“You are still way too damn independent.” I shake my head at her.

Baratta helps me to get the last three folding tables down to the ground and we carry them outside for the girls to set up how they like.

“Hey, Snake, can I talk with you for a moment?” Mina asks once we are done.

“Sure. What’s up?” I follow her as she is walking around directing all the chaos.

“The company we use to do the rental cabins has a renter for the one not far from you.”

“Oh, really? That was fast.” I answer.

“Yeah, she’s a recently widowed single mom so she needed it quickly.”

I feel an ache for the woman. Being widowed is one thing but to also have kids in the middle of that is heartbreaking.

“Sounds rough.”

“Yeah. I’m sure it is. I don’t know what I’d do if the kids and I lost Timber. Pretty sure I’d not be able to even function.” She gets a lost look into her eyes and pat her on the back.

“You don’t have to worry about that brute. He’ll outlive us all.” She laughs.

“You’re probably right.”

“So, were you needing me to do something?” I prod, wondering what all this has to do with me.

“Oh, yes. Sorry.” She smiles. “I wanted to know if you’d mind meeting her out there tomorrow to give her a tour and the keys. Timber and I have a meeting with Hawk’s teacher.” Her eyes widen at me and it’s my turn to laugh.
