I couldn’t move.

His purr stuttered out, and he drew the phone away slightly. “You… don’t want that, little thief?”

I grabbed his wrist before he withdrew it completely, a terrified sound slipping from my chest.

My finger shook as I pressed it to the screen and watched the message pop up in the chat. It was supposed to be over now, but the text promised more.

I wanted him gone, and to never come back—not more. Although, there was a faint scratching of curiosity as to who the others were at the end of that chat.

What did they think of the photo?

What would they think of me?

What would Dusk tell them tonight when he returned? That I was… enough? Maybe… enough that he wouldn’t notice how broken I was—that I might pass for any other omega he might find in this academy?

No.

It didn’t matter.

Not when I had my mates to meet tomorrow.

“What do you think?” he murmured. “Are you more angry at me, or you, for enjoying that so damn much?”

I couldn’t look at him as I hugged myself.

“Leave.” I squeezed my eyes shut, which meant I jumped when I felt his grip in my hair, dragging my lips to— My eyes flew open in shock as I realised what was happening.

He was… kissing me.

With not acare in the world for the cum he’d forced me to swallow. He groaned deep in his chest as I tried to rip myself free, but he towered over me, twice my size, and even with only one hand fisted in my hair, he held me against him with ease. He drove his tongue past my lips, exploring my mouth, and something about that held a frightening truth.

When he drew away, trying to string my thoughts together was like wading through a swamp.

“Fuck your match,” he breathed. “Fuck the universe and its stupid choices. I’m going to give you the world.”

And with that, he left me alone with the violent claws of a panic attack that didn’t even know what to do with a crazy bitch like me.

THREE

After further study, I’ve discovered the subject’s scent is not only aggravating to alphas, but actually repels all scent profiles it is paired with.

SHATTER

“With the state of your condition, with your scent, you shouldn’t risk going near alphas.”

“But… but for how long? I’m… I’m an omega, I have to?—”

“Your scent profile isn’t like anything we’ve seen. I’m sorry, Little One, but we’ve got the results. There is no scent match out there for you. Without mates… I can’t, in good conscience, allow you around alphas. Not now, not ever.”

They’d told me I would never have mates, but they’d been wrong, though. About the scent match. About everything.

And today, it all changed.

Today, I could finally discover myself with my mates at my side.

I stepped into a grand room decorated with crystal chandeliers. It was bustling with life, and above were thousands of warm, twinkling lightsilluminating the sea of extravagance below. Well-dressed staff members were already moving around the ball, serving drinks to the guests. I entered with the other omegas, all of whom were hoping to score a place with a rich pack so their education was guaranteed and paid for. I knew the dream for many here, like mine, was more than that: a pack for life.

The alphas ahead, the ones to be courted, were all dressed well in dark suits with styled hair. The omegas around me were in gowns that outshone mine, but I didn’t look completely out of place.
