My outfit was simple: I wore a black dress—the nicest one I’d had in the suitcase—and matching flats, and my hair was up in a bun so that no one would know that I didn’t know how to tame it. My neck remained bare and was free of visible marks, which was the most important thing when trying to gain alpha attention.

I scanned the room as I moved further into the crowd. There were more omegas and alphas in one place than I could have imagined. The aura capacity was high, so security was a must, legally speaking. There was a lot of competition, but I knew what I needed to do.

When I reached them, everything in the last three months would be behind me. Everything, including Dusk Varis.

I swallowed.

He was a permanent fixture in my mind. I’d barely slept last night, and I wasn’t daring enough with the scant makeup in the suitcase I’d stolen to try covering up the bags under my eyes. Worst of all, I couldn’t rid myself of the thought of him, no matter how hard I tried.

“Dusk Varis doesn’t like anyone.”Those were the words of the omegas around me. They were obsessed with him and his stupid pack. Those who were ready early had been waiting outside for hours now, and the gossip had been flying.

“No one knows which omega they’ll choose. They’ve stated no preferences. It’s a fair game. If you can win them over, you’re sorted—but they don’t like anyone, don’t seem that nice to be honest. Still, worth it.”

I squeezed my eyes shut, rejecting that.

Dusk Varis was a foul monster who didn’t deserve any omega.

Anyomega…? Or an omega who isn’t you…

I ignored the way my stomach turned at the idea of another omega joining his pack. My instincts were off kilter from all the scent blockers. It meant nothing, though. He’d done something last night he couldn’t take back, and the primal side of my brain couldn’t let it go.

“You’re so perfect…”In the few moments I had found sleep, Dusk’s words had crept into each dream previously reserved for my mates. Would he say that to anyone? Or had he meant it? Something about the way he’d looked at me last night had made me feel as if I might be the only omega on the planet.

I scowled at the filthy, traitorous thoughts violating my brain.

That’s exactly what he wanted you to fucking think.

It didn’t matter.

I had mates waiting for me. They’d wipe him from my mind. Then Dusk could pick whomever he wanted.

Fixing the scowl on my face, I followed the entering throng of visitors, hating that a part of me searched for that sweep of dark hair and piercing yellow eyes as much as I searched for my mates.

I had to stay focused on my task. He was in this room. He’d probably evenseeme, but he couldn’t stop me from getting to them anymore. Another obstacle in a million, on a journey that would soon be behind me.

My scent blockers would have faded at last. I’d planned it meticulously as I couldn’t be without scent blockers for too long, or I might find myself in trouble—especially with a crowd like this, with alphas everywhere. My mates, and the bond we would have, that would fix everything.

I couldn’t catch my own scent, but usually the looks people gave me told me enough. Here, however, odd looks weren’t out of the ordinary. My mates wouldn’t be repulsed though. Only minutes, and I would know that truth.

Anxiety sent me spiralling, and I snatched a drink that was offered by a passing tray. From here, I could see the tables at the head of the room. It was the only area of the party that had seen very little movement so far.

There would be layers and layers of political manoeuvring that happened at those tables, but I could ignore all of that. Mates could break all rules.

I was about to find safety beyond anything I previously knew. But if my mates were going to save me, I had to go to them now before any omega got there first. I steeled myself, downing the whole glass and weaving through the crowd toward them.

I caught sight of them the moment I stepped past the thickest parts of the crowd. The tables at the head of the room were occupied by only the most elite alpha packs.

And there they were: the Lincoln pack.

Every other thought drained from my mind. Elation rose in my chest, equal parts thrill and fear as I began toward them.

The universe began its orbit around them anew.

It had been like that the first time I’d seen them, when I’d caught their scent through the bannisters, looking down at a grand dining room in the Aster Estate. I’d hidden there for ages until I was discovered and shooed away. Even then, I’d snuck back out to stare at the alphas who were visiting.

That was where I’d heard about their plans to enrol in this academy. It was why they’d visited the Aster Estate in the first place: my uncle, the owner of the house I’d come from, was their sponsor for enrolment in this very academy, which was how I knew they’d be here. It had been a journey to reach them after I’d fled the Estate, one filled with doubt and fear.

But I had no choice.
