“How did you get so good?” I prodded.

“I don’t know. Actually…” She trailed off, looking uncomfortable.

I narrowed my eyes. “I’m calling in my truth.”

“You cheated in that game,” she said. “And you haven’t asked me a question for weeks.”

True.

I liked the idea that she couldn’t lie to me without me getting a bite, so I’d just left it as it was. She’d never just told me she quit—which she could have. Itmade me chuckle thinking about it, especially considering she got nervous every time she caught herself in an almost-lie.

“What were you trying to avoid telling me right there?” I asked. If she was still hiding it from us after everything we knew, it must be important.

She chewed on her lip, then shrugged. “I don’t remember.”

I narrowed my eyes. “Are you lying to me, Nightshade? Because if you are, I get your neck.”

She scowled. “No, I mean… I don’t remember why I’m good at Arkology.”

I frowned. “How?”

She ran her tongue along her teeth, twisting her fingers together. “I don’t remember much of when I was young.”

Much?

What did that mean?

“A-anything, actually. Not before I was nineteen.”

My hair stood on end. “You don’t remember anything before you were nineteen years old?”

She shook her head. “I woke up…” She paused. “…somewhere. And before that there was nothing.”

I woke up in a straight jacket amidst darkness. I was made of nothing but feral rage.

There was endless darkness from before.

I was no one.

Was she the same?

Of course she’s the same… How the fuck had we missed that?

“You never mentioned it before?”

“I don’t like to think about it.”

I stared at her.

I got that. Neither me nor Dusk talked about it if we didn’t have to.

That was probably wildly important information I should go and give Dusk right away. Instead, I couldn’t tear my gaze from her.

Me, Dusk, and Shatter. We were the same. Ransom… well, Ransom was his own brand of fucked, but he had his memories. At least… Ithoughthe did—or would, when he woke up.

“What?” Her voice was soft with nerves.

“We’re switching the game, Nightshade,” I said.
