That seemed wildly unfair.

“I’m in no rush,” Dusk replied.

Eric smiled, eyes snagging on me once more, before he glanced at Roxy. “Do you mind going on ahead? Meet us at the apartment.”

Roxy smiled, and my blood turned to ice as she leaned up and pressed a kiss to Gareth’s cheek. “I’ll have something cooking by the time you’re back.”

Gareth looked charmed, but I noticed Flynn’s dark eyes slide to me again, as if he couldn’t help himself.

He definitely knows.

But… it wasn’t enough.

They were living with Roxy now. She was so pretty with pale skin, blood red lips and long glossy black hair.

Would they fall for her?

I mean… how could they not?

So when my mates slid into the booth, I was the only one drowning in my scent matches. The only one slightly heady with the experience as Eric began chatting to Dusk.

Proposed alliance. Something about being good for the image…

I couldn’t keep track.

Roxy was ahead of me, but I realised I’d been going about this all wrong.Shewas probably doing this all right. I’d been focused on my mates because I needed them, but what if she was getting to know them? Finding out what they were really like, what they enjoyed—the kinds of thingstheyliked to eat.

I needed them, and my ask, when I finally showed them who I was, it was going to be massive.

If I expected them to take care of me, I needed to have a plan to take care of them, too. It shouldn’t be hard.

We were destined for each other.

Stupid and socially clumsy I might be, but we were supposed to be compatible.

Still, I wanted to melt into the floor. I kept feeling their gazes drift to me like magnets. But my cheeks were flushed, and I couldn’t maintain eye contact with any of them, not trusting myself not to blurt out something stupid.

They were really good looking. Flynn’s mid-length black hair was messier today than I remembered. It looked a little harder to tame.

There was one thing we had in common.

Dusk shifted behind me, and I realised how rigid he was. He had been since the moment my pack had arrived, even when his words were smooth and perfect. His grip around my waist was tight, as if he was as uncomfortable as me—except that didn’t make sense.

I tugged at my nail anxiously, trying to snag more looks without seeming creepy.

I had to do better than fucking hair if I wanted to connect with them.

Roxy’s hair was glossy and perfect and tamable.

As they talked, I couldn’t keep my eyes from drifting to Gareth, who was closest. He’d been playing with a pen that he’d set down as he piped into the conversation. It was all I could focus on. It was heavy, expensive looking with marble patterns in purple and white.

Gareth’spen, with his sesame and sunflowers scent. My hand shifted to the table, still only half focused on the conversation.

It was a visceral need, something that ached right down to my bones.

My hand inched closer and closer as the conversation continued. I had no idea what they were on about. My mates were doing most of the talking while Dusk’s responses were sporadic, each a faint vibration down my spine, pressed against me as he was.

I was an inch away, so close. Gareth had leaned forward, arms on the table, obscuring the pen from the others while he focused on Dusk.
