“…Yes, well…” The Dean went on, but his words were dull and insignificant, as always.

I could have used a blade or a knife. I could have tied him down.

I’d done neither.

Instead, I’d let him run. The sound of his footfalls and ragged breaths had been music to my ears…

“…No need to dance around the issue…” The Dean was saying.

There was a rigid smile on my face as I tuned him out almost entirely.

My soft footfalls of boots echoed about the dark hallways of the mansion. The static of my aura shivering in the air as I hunted. It wavered and sparked and danced around me.

“The omega you selected is a fraud.” At those words, my imaginings vanished. My gaze snapped to the Dean.

Not so insignificant, after all.

“We uh…” He looked unnerved now he had all of my attention. “When we tried to process her in the system, her paperwork came back as illegitimate. Please give Mr. Kingsman our deepest apologies. We dotryto be?—”

He cut off as I held up a hand.

“Ifher application wasfraudulent, I wouldn’t give the first fuck. But I happen to be certain it’s not.” An outright and thrilling lie.

Of course Shatter had applied fraudulently, it suited her entirely.

“I’ll review the files and resubmit them.”

The Dean watched me anxiously. “I assure you, we triple checked. Some of her application tests were flawless—suspiciously so. I can’t explain how she got ahold of those, but her documentation… Well, if I didn’t know better, I’d say she was unr?—”

“Isaid,” I cut him off. “I’ll review the files for resubmission.”

The Dean licked his lips nervously, but I continued before he could speak.

“I encouraged her to apply. If there was an error with her submission, I amfullyresponsible.”

He nodded, eyes darting between mine. “I-I’m sorry, Mr. Varis. Didn’t mean to offend?—”

“Shatter was chosen by our pack. It wasn’t an accident,” I said, the words slow and cold.

Again, he nodded, finally grasping what I was saying. This academy dealt almost exclusively in arrogant alpha packs, and if there was one thing rich alphas did best it was staking claims without a care in the world for paperwork and process.

I got to my feet and left without dismissal, already drafting the email I needed to send on my phone outside of the Dean’s office.

To: [email protected]

Need these redone. Have to be good enough for Rookwood academy. She’s gold pack, but I don’t want that showing yet. Find out if she’s registered. If she isn’t, sort it.

That would be enough.

I headed back to our quarters beneath a light, late-summer rain that lifted petrichor from the nearby flowerbeds. What might that conversation have looked like if Shatter’s mates had been called by the Dean instead of me?

Could they have managed it like I would—and what might it have cost her?

I tapped my phone on and off, waiting at the doors to the housing building, not used to the anxiety bubbling in my chest.

I was used to managing this shit, but Shatter hadn’t known us when this paperwork was done. If she had, it would have been perfect the first time around.

No more than three minutes passed when an email popped up in my notifications.
