I blinked, something dragging me from my thoughts. Shatter was… different. She’d frozen, the blood drained from her face and left it ashen.
Fear.
That was the first time I’d seen her sunlight truly wane.
A low growl caught in my throat, and I was ready to tear to pieces anything that made her frightened.
She stepped back a pace, her eyes wide.
The bubble popped, and I smashed right back into reality.
My aura was out: static and chaos flickering in the room. She was staring atmelike that. Afraid ofme.
My blade, I realised, was clutched in my fist.
No no no.She didn’t understand.
It wasn’t forher.
I tried to put it back in my pocket, but I couldn’t. Razor teeth clicked from the depths of that void dehiscing within my soul, frayed stitches straining and snapping.
Shatter took another small step back as if she dared not move any quicker.
Sunlight dimmed further.
Ihadto put the knife away.
The thought was met with something sickening, a bone deep terror pooling at the top of my mind, shivering and restless.
What if I waited, and Dusk’s debt came due?
The thought was a drop breaking free, consuming everything as it tumbled silently into the abyss.

Then it shattered upon gnashing teeth with the earth-shaking sound of a gunshot.
Dusk lay face down, hair matted with crimson, staring sightlessly.
I couldn’t wait.
The wound was closing above me, and I was still inside.
Another drop was in freefall.
When it shattered,Ransom was still. Still and pale. I’d stared for so long, unable to move, trying to catch the faintest movement of a breath, too afraid to close the distance and see if he had finally left me.

I grabbed the door handle to flee Umbra’s room just as I heard the bathroom door slam. I froze, still shaking from head to toe, staring back to check I was safe. He was gone.
