She took a step back, rich skin going ashen, but I caught her wrist.

“No.” Her voice was a frightened hiss.

“‘No’is not a very obedient word.”

She looked ready to run, but instead she reached out to me, almost imploring, then drew back. “Please.” Her voice shook. She was trying to reason with me as if she were cracking a mask and stepping out of a game, and we could just turn off reality. “You never said… You never said that. I’m doing what you want.” Her lip trembled. “You said you were only going to… to punish me.”

“I will. And when I’m done, I’m going to take care of you.”

“You said I’d get the nest.”

I raised an eyebrow, getting to my feet at last and catching her before she could stagger another pace back. “Shatter,” I breathed, forcing her to look at me. “You think I’d let you walk into a nest I made for you if you weren’t covered in my scent? If you didn’t have me dripping down your thighs?”

A whimper slipped from her, and her lip trembled.

“It’smynest,” I said. “And you want it.”

She clasped her fingers, and I saw a flash of vulnerability I hadn’t before. “It’s not becauseyoumade it that I want it.”

I believed her, actually.

She was cracking. The nest was solace.

She was almosttoowild for an omega—more than I’d even known was possible—tangled in instincts that ruled her more than she did them.

I recognised that when I saw it.

I’d seen her and claimed her as mine, consequences be damned.

Since the first night I’d seen her, I hadn’t been able to rid her from my dreams. She wouldn’t know how torturous it was to wait for her tonight.

I needed more of those fragments of space when I saw her crack, when I pushed her hard enough that I could see that thing she was so desperately fighting: that she wanted us.

Also… her lips around my cock—thatI hadn’t been able to shed from my hormone riddled brain.Fuck,I needed her. Andsheneeded her own space in our home.

I’d had her nest ready before she’d even arrived. I wouldn’t feel guilty because she’d been too stubborn to take it. This desperation was her own fault.

“What would you have done if they hadn’t made you a nest?” I asked.

Her lips drew back in a snarl. “The nest they’ll make me will make yours look likenothing.”

My laugh was hollow and purely reactionary. I didn’t, at that moment, think I could have hidden the sickness on my face without it.

She had no idea.

There would be no nest.

No love.

I knew the Lincoln pack’s reputation though; I knew how charming of a mask they wore, and how vile the creatures beneath. But Shatter, it seemed, had been taken by it, too.

What would have happened if I hadn’t found her when I did? What might alphas like them do if they discovered their scent match was an unregistered gold pack…?

Goosebumps lifted across my skin at the thought of it, and my grip on her tightened.

She wasn’t ready for that truth.

“Please, Dusk.” Her face was still pale. “You c-can’t take that. It’s th-theirs.”
