“And if you lie, what do Iget?” I asked.

“I won’t,” he said so fucking sure, but I folded my arms, and he chuckled. “Youcan biteme.”

I wrinkled my nose, standing from my seat with my finished food tray. “Not much of a win if you’re the one who wants it?”

Umbra followed me, a rumble of a laugh in his chest. “Now she’s getting it,” he said. “Go on then, ask for something.”

I set my tray down, turning to him. “Let me go to them.”

Umbra laughed. “A lie isn’t worth that.”

I narrowed my eyes. Therewassomething worth that to him? Could I figure out what it was?

I forced myself not to look around, searching for my mates in here like I did in every room I entered. It would just give him more ammo. Instead, I began toward the doors, leading us to the afternoon class. It was a bit early, but at least those booths felt private.

People had been staring at us all day, though. The omega with the untouchable alphas. The pack who’d ignored all requests and invitations from the most prestigious omegas in this place. And they were fucking about with a scentless nobody like me. I could have tolerated it, if it were my mates claiming me. That would have been a claim I could be proud of. These stares, the ones pairing me with alphas I hadn’t chosen; they were like pinpricks, each one digging into my skin. I wanted to scream the truth at them all.

“Alright.” Umbra cocked his head. “Ask for something else.”

“Fine,” I said. “How about extra questions?”

“Hmm.” He pondered that. “Okay. So that’s the game? You lie, I get a bite, and if I lie when you ask, you get a bonus truth.”

“But what if you lie with my extra truth?” I asked as if it mattered. But I wouldn’t admit to him that I’d never be able to tell the difference. I was as bad at spotting lies as I was at dishonesty. I’d even left a apology note on the bench after I’d stolen that poor woman’s suitcase at the train station.

“How about then you get to punish me however you like?”

My cheeks heated, eyes flicking to a group of nearby girls who were staring at us, clearly to listen in.

Punish him? My mind cycled through what that might mean.

Umbra, who’d stopped with me out in the midday air, crossed his arms, leaning against the stone wall.

“I don’t know what that means,” I told him.

“What do you want it to mean? You could get me to make you food all week, take you shopping, or I could be your own personal nest alpha?—”

“Nestalpha?”

“Omegas get lonely right? What if you needed an alpha on duty in your nest to bring you snacks and drinks—and cuddle you any time?”

“I won’t… need that.” But my throat had gone dry.

“Then I guess you could punish me like Dusk punished you, if you’d prefer that. But you’d have to ask him for supplies, I’m not a belt kind of guy.”

A strangled choking sound came up my throat, getting a few glances from passing students. “Hetoldyou?”

“He tells me everything.”

I wrinkled my nose.

“Also a heavy feature in my dreams. Biting you, imagining your cute sounds when Dusk punished you, imagining what sounds you’ll make for mewhen I finally getmyfuck—” He cut off with a laugh at the snarl that rose in my throat. “You’re blushing just thinking about it, Little Nightshade.”

“I’m not.”

“You are.”

“I’m—” Fuck. Whatever. “Just let me ask my question.”
