Umbra grinned. “Game on?” he asked, holding out his hand. I took it, unsettled by the delighted smile on his face. When the handshake dropped, he began down the hallway toward our next class.

“You first?” he asked me as I matched his pace.

“Yes.”

“Alright. Go on then.”

“Why isn’t Ransom here?” I asked instantly. As much as I was curious about Dusk’s bruise, if we were making trades, there were more important questions.

Umbra considered that, cocking his head. “He’s unwell.”

I paused, taken aback by how fast he admitted that. “Unwell?” I asked. “How?”

“Is that another question?” Umbra prodded.

“Uh… Wait. Just let me think about it,” I told him, mind trying to unravel that. Ransom was sick? Did that mean he’d be back soon? He was an alpha, he likely wouldn’t be down for much longer. It had been two weeks since his pack had arrived and he hadn’t been seen once. “You ask yours.”

“You have a scar on the back of your neck,” Umbra noted, peering sideways at me. “Where is it from?”

My touch crept to my neck on instinct.

When had he noticed that?

It was a faint scar, almost entirely invisible if you weren’t looking for it. Most people didn’t…

“This is the best option, alright Little One. When he bites you, you accept his pack.”

“But I don’t know him yet.” My voice shook.

“I promise, Shatter, there will not be a better option than this, okay?”

My palms were clammy as the alpha, who was talking to Uncle, looked down the hall to me. He was unfamiliar. Daunting. His brows furrowed when he caught my scent, and his jaw ticked.

Uncle had paid him well to take me, I knew that, even if Aunty Lauren wouldn’t say it. He was here to get me out of their hair.

He’d bite me, even if he hated my scent.

She patted my hair, sorrow in her gaze as she looked me up and down.

“What if... what if I go with him and then...?” Memories of Tom had my nails drawing blood from my palms.

“They know your scent.” She cupped my cheek. “All three of them do. They didn’t have any violent reactions. We’re going to keep an eye on you. And heats are your call. However you want them done. Keep calm now, you know it’ll be much harder for him if you’re upset.”

Right. My scent... it became worse for them when I was afraid or angry.

“One bite, you’ll feel his offer. All you have to do is accept it. Then that’s it, you’re safe, and you have a pack.”

Something deepin my soul quaked at her words. Taking a breath, I peeked back down the hall.

The alpha was well-dressed, hands clasped before his suit. He had a black goatee and slicked-back hair. His dark gaze pinned me in place.

“Alright, Little One, are you ready?”

Despite how I trembled, I nodded.

A pack.A bite.A happily ever after.

It’s what I wanted, right?
