“Beat more than just the odds this time.”

SHATTER

My own mates entered this horrifying picture.

I learned, at last, what role they had to play. With every line, I read the truth.

My pain, it was the smallest piece, there was more, spanning further than I could have imagined.

“An observation room?” Ransom asked, voice rough as he read behind me. “They were watching while they… they ran experiments on you?”

Dusk’s expression was twisted. “They were betting.”

“It wasn’t just that,” Decebal said. “They made sport of it, but they were there for a reason. We don’t know the full story, but they were there for the experiments as much as the bets.”

“Her…mates?” Ransom asked.

“All the major players involved are dead or insane, so they’re all we’ve got. We know they took something, we just don’t know what it is. The day they left, they walked away with a suitcase. We don’t know what was inside?—”

“We hope whatever it is, it will give us answers,” Dusk added, catching Ransom’s expression. “Thought it was the winnings at first, but those were deposited into an offshore bank account Decebal’s pack mate dug up.”

“Whatever’s in there will help you get better?” Ransom asked.

Decebal nodded.

“And they didn’t recognise you at the academy?” I asked. If the Lincoln pack had watched…

“The feeds weren’t detailed,” Decebal said. “And neither Umbra nor Dusk…” He glanced between them apologetically. “They lookeddifferentback then. Hair was short, and they weren’t… well. Their names were their own choice, the facility never had those.”

I understood. Even that picture of me in a white gown with my hair up and expression drawn. It was all but unrecognisable…

“They’re our last lead,” Dusk said. “But we know they’re close to it. What happened the other week, when I collapsed, it was because Flynn touched me.”

My gaze snapped up to him, throat dry.

Whathad he just said?

Everything that had happened, was because Flynn hadtouchedhim? My mind was racing in a thousand directions, a thousand puzzle pieces trying to fit together all at once.

I… needed to read these files again.

“Who?” Ransom asked.

“Their pack lead. He put a hand on my arm, and?—”

“And you nearly died,” Decebal said.

What the hell did that mean? There was more to this… More even than Decebal’s notes showed.

“Question is, how do you plan on dealing with them, if you can’t touch them?” Decebal asked.

“Hecan.” Dusk said, nodding at Ransom. “He was never a part of the experiments. He touched Flynn in the apartment, too. Nothing happened.”

“So whatever happened is contained to you and Umbra?” Decebal asked. “I’ll take any good news.”

“Why are we fucking around with academy enrollment?” Ransom demanded. “We know where they sleep, just?—”

“No,” I cut him off, worry rising in my chest. “We don’t know how they’re connected.”
