“No.” I shook my head, ignoring the warmth at the back of my neck. “We were both…”

“Virgins?” she guessed, and I nodded. “You’re sure he was? I mean, for sure? Sometimes guys say things…” I blinked and then frowned.

“Aiden’s not a liar.”

“I know, honey, but in the heat of the moment…”

“I trust him.” And I did. He didn’t lie to me.

“Okay, good.” She pressed her lips together. “And as for the other reason to use protection?” And that’s when it hit me.

What my beautiful sweet-souled sister was trying to ask me.

“I’m not pregnant,” I blurted and then blinked. I didn’t think I was, at least. I should have been in the safe-ish time of the month.

“Okay.” Her gaze softened, and she unclicked her seatbelt. “If you’re sure.”

“I am,” I lied. It had only been a week. But there was no way I could be pregnant with my best friend’s baby… right?

“So, for next time…”

“There might not be a next—" She shot me a look, and I sighed.

“If there is, you should be careful. Like I said, you’re young. You’re nineteen?—"

“Almost twenty.” My birthday was only a couple of months away.

“Right. That’s still young. You have your whole life ahead of you. Both of you do.”

“And Aria is a mom of two, about to be three,” I reminded her.

Aria was a year older than me and had hooked up with her boss she used to nanny for. Now she was a bonus mom for what I considered the cutest twin nieces a girl could have and about to have a baby of her own.

“True… but her partner has his life put together.” I flinched at her words. I knew she didn’t mean for them to sound harsh. The truth hurt sometimes. “Aiden is still in school, and you…”

“Yeah.” I rolled my eyes. “Me,” I huffed, resting my head on the back of the passenger seat. “I’m a mess.”

“You’re not a mess.” I smiled at her squished nose.

“I love you, Fabi, but you’re a terrible liar.”

“Hey! I’m not lying. You’re not a mess. Not even close. You’re figuring out what you want to do with your life, and that’s okay. Sometimes, that takes a moment.”

“Yeah.” I swallowed and glanced out the window. What I wanted to do with my life. I closed my eyes for a moment and let my heart dream, uninhibited.

I wanted a life with Aiden.

I wanted to wake up and fall asleep in his arms every day and night. I wanted a family of our own. Kids with dark hair and his eyes and nose. A loud, noisy place filled with love and warmth. As for a career, I’d always liked working at the diner with Aiden, his brother, and mom.

I enjoyed being part of the community.

Feeding people and serving them food that hit your soul and stomach. I opened my eyes and turned to my sister, who was already staring at me.

“So… what do you want to do? Stay here, go in with me, or—" She pointed up at the stairwell that led to the apartment above the diner where Aiden lived.

“I’m going to go say hi.” I pointed upstairs, and she smiled warmly. Quietly, we slipped out of the tank of a car she drove. When we rounded the front of it, my sister hugged me tightly, and I held on for a little longer.

“It’s going to be okay. No matter what, everything is going to be okay,” she promised in a whisper, and I breathed.
