I knew she was right.

I’d seen my sisters date and have their heart broken as well as watched them fall for men who seemingly were perfectly made for each one of them. “Remember what Mami says. Cuando algo es para ti, te encuentra. When something is for you, it will find you.” I smiled. I liked the reminder of what my mom always said. “Call or text me when you’re ready to go. I’ll have a bite to eat.”

“Right,” I whispered, pulling away. I watched her wink and start her way into the diner.

Ignoring that my legs felt like rubber and my heart raced like it had a pair of hummingbird wings attached to it, I took the stairs up and stood at his door. A door I’d been in front of countless times. But never had I ever felt so damn nervous. I lifted my hand to knock when the door opened and I stared into Jayden, Aiden’s older brother’s, eyes.

“Jay.”

“Hey, my little traveler!” He leaned in and hugged me.

“Hey!” I squeaked, pulling back.

“How are you?” he asked, and even though it felt innocent enough, there was something about the way he was looking at me that had the hairs on the back of my neck standing up.

“I’m…” I opened and shut my mouth. “Fine,” I lied, and by the way his gaze softened, I had a feeling he knew it. “I wanted to see if Aiden was home.”

“He’s in the shower, about to come out any moment.”

“Oh.” My face started to heat up. “Umm, I can go wait downstairs,” I offered, but he simply shook his head and gently led me inside.

“Nonsense. You basically live here when he’s home.” I felt the blush start to spread over my face. “Just do me a favor, will ya?”

“What’s up?”

“When Aiden gets out, tell him he’s welcome.”

“What?” But he didn’t answer. He simply waved and shut the front door behind him. Jayden hadn’t been gone for a minute when I heard the bathroom door open.

“You know, you’re a pain in my ass.” Aiden’s voice sounded from behind me, and when I turned to apologize for being a pain, I couldn’t say another word.

Not when he was standing in nothing but a navy-blue towel wrapped around his waist, droplets of water sluicing down his chest.

“Gemma?”

“I’m sorry,” I found myself saying.

“For?”

“Being a pain in?—"

“No! I didn’t mean you.” He shook his head and stepped forward and then stopped. The moment felt awkward and slightly uncomfortable. I didn’t like that he didn’t walk right toward me like he would have done before.

I hated the space between us. and I was the only one to blame.

CHAPTER EIGHT

aiden

I letthe steaming hot water pound down my back. Relaxing and soothing the tight muscles on my back and shoulders. I shut my eyes and let my mind wander to the woman of my dreams. My dream girl and best friend. Gemma.

Gemma and her sweet gaze and soft touch.

Gem, who understood me better than anyone in this world.

All I wanted in life was her. I needed her like I needed air to breathe. The last week had sucked, and I was done hanging around with a finger up my ass, waiting for her to come to her senses.

Gemma was probably scared. Worried I didn’t feel the same way.
