But you told her you loved her,a voice perked up in my ears. I tried to shake it away. Just like she knew me, I knew her.

I knew how in her head she could get.

How she could tangle herself up in knots.

Shit. I turned the water off and wrapped a towel around my waist. I needed to help Jay hang Christmas lights and decorate, but fuck me, I needed to get to my girl.

I stomped out of the steaming bathroom, fired up.

“You know, you’re a pain in my ass,” I said into the empty hallway and stopped in the living room, my eyes on the kitchen.

An almost empty kitchen.

Gem’s delicate frame stood with her back to me, and when she turned, my body heat notched up ten degrees.

“Gemma?” My voice sounded strained in my ears.Is she actually here? In my place? Standing in front of me? Or have I officially lost my shit?

“I’m sorry,” she said as her eyes roamed up my body. My dick kicked into gear, getting hard at the speed of light. I breathed in, and her scent was actually in the air. She was really here,

“For?” I asked as I tried to hold on to some kind of shred of control.

“Being a pain in?—"

“No, I didn’t mean you.” I shook my head and stepped forward but stopped. I didn’t want to crowd her. “Jay was here,” I shared.

“He just left.” She pointed at the door behind her. I didn’t miss the way her eyes dropped to my wet bare chest. “He said to tell you you’re welcome?”

“I’m… what does that mean?”

“I don’t know. It’s Jay,” she reminded me, and that made enough sense to me. Unless he’d set this up. Had me shower because he had somehow talked Gem into coming over. “Did he call you?”

“What?” She looked confused. “No. Why? Was he supposed to?”

“No.” I shook my head. “So…” Everything in my body was yelling at me, fucking shouting at me to go straight up to her and pick her up.

I could see it in my head.

Exactly how the whole thing would unfold. I’d pick her up, and her lithe body would wrap around me while I held on to herwith one arm while the other picked up her hair like a ponytail, wrap it around my wrist so I could control the hot and heavy kiss I was dying to give her.

Instead, my feet stayed as if nailed down to the ground while we stared at one another.

“What’s up?” I finally broke the silence, hating the distance between us.

“What’s up?” She paled, and I lost sight of her eyes when they dropped to the ground. I could feel her thinking a million miles an hour. “Nothing,” she finally replied, looking up at me. “Mom wanted a pie, and Fabi wanted to go for a drive.” She was lying; I could tell by the way she wouldn’t completely meet my gaze.

“Just a drive, huh?”

“Yeah. Since we were here, I just wanted to say hi. See how you settled in.”

“Oh.” My jaw clenched so tightly I was surprised I didn’t shatter it.

“Anyhow, looks like you’re…” Her fingers pointed up and down as if I wasn’t more than aware of how little I wore. “Looks like you were getting ready.”

“Gonna help put lights up.”

“Oh.” Her pretty lips turned into a perfect O, and I knew Jayden had something to do with the timing of everything. Gemma loved to help decorate the diner.

“Wanna hang out?” I found myself asking.
