The band had a couple of days off before the Vegas shows, and he had invited everyone over for us to hang out before the tour picked up again. The rest of the band would be joining us in tomorrow night. Jax had insisted we fly back.

“Let the press think it’s our own mini honeymoon,”he said when I tried to argue with him, and the band manager had agreed. Mentioning it was a good idea to help us sell our marriage.Sell our marriage.

The term made me think everyone knew about our little agreement.

It shouldn’t have surprised me, but something about it left me on edge. Worried that the writer on tour who was working on a book about the band would hear about it and add it to the tell-all book he was working on.

Either way, I was glad we had flown ahead of everyone.

It was the first time Jax and I were alone since getting married.

The house was beautiful. White walls and lush green plants surrounded the space, making it an oasis in the desert. The open-concept floor plan with pristine walls and hints of dark wood made the place relaxing.

And under any other circumstances, I’d do just that.

But I couldn’t seem to shake off the anxiety I’d felt since we crossed the Nevada border. Being back home felt like a reminder all good things came to an end. Before I’d know it, the fantasy world I’d let myself get caught up in would vanish into thin air and life would return to being life.

But you’ll have your bakery. Jax wouldn’t break his promise.I knew he wouldn’t. But after he returned to the limelight, I wondered if Jax would want to go back to performing.

Some of the guys had started solo careers. Would Jax want that? Why couldn’t I get myself to ask him? Because I was worried about what he’d say. Maybe the end was closer than I wanted it to be?

“Sorry about that.” Jax stepped into the living room, snapping me out of my dark thoughts.

I turned just in time to watch him slip his phone into the back pocket of his dark denim jeans. The sleeves of his black T-shirt fought against the laws of physics as his biceps bunched, becoming impossibly distracting.

“The band should be here by tomorrow night.” His eyes locked on mine, and he stopped talking. We just stared at one another in silence for a moment, and I caught him wince.

“What is it?” I asked.

“I fucked up.”

“Oh?” My head tilted, and then my eyes widened as he rushed toward me. “Jax?” I gasped.

Before I could ask what he was up to, he lifted me in his arms and opened the door that led to the backyard.

“Okay, ready?” he asked, making me feel a little confused.

“Ready for what?” I squeaked, and he winked, moving us back into the house.

“I didn’t carry you over the threshold,” he whispered roughly as he set me back on my feet, making sure my body slid against his front. His hands moved from the small of my back to my neck, and I felt them squeeze. “Have I told you I think you’re fucking beautiful?” My heart started to pick up speed.

“I am? You do?” I tried to remember what I was wearing, but as I stared into the most beautiful, soulful eyes, I could hardly remember my name.

“You are. You’re so damn beautiful it hurts not to be around you.” His Adam’s apple bobbed, and I had a feeling he wanted to say something more. I recognized the look from the countless nights we’d sat side by side in our backyard.

How the hell do those days feel like a lifetime ago?

How didn’t I recognize him?I’d never believed people could look at Clark Kent and not know he was Superman, but I had done just that.

“What is it?” I asked quietly. My lips tingled with the way his gaze focused on my mouth. His dark gaze intensified and reminded me of double chocolate buttercream with specks of salted caramel dusted on top.

He made my body ache to be touched when no one had ever managed to do that. The living room felt like it got warmer. The air thickened as we stared at one another, and our bodies swayed impossibly close. So close, I doubted a sheet of paper would fit between us.

“I want to kiss you.” Jax’ tone made my skin prickle with awareness.

“You do?” I hardly recognized my voice. I couldn’t help how my body reacted to him. The man was gorgeous. Both as the grumpy mechanic I’d got to know and the bad boy on stage who knew how to sing and play a guitar like a rockstar. He was incredible and didn’t give himself enough credit.

“I do.” His head dipped lower, and my body froze. Not because he was invading my space but because I wanted him to kiss me. I was dying for it.
