Excitement and adrenaline were still running happily in my veins after our backstage party and band dinner, and I knew exactly who I had to thank for that.

I pulled the small, folded notebook from my back pocket when I reached the door to our master bedroom. The entire band and crew were in the house, along with the guest and pool house outside. I touched the cover of the notebook and smiled.

I liked having everyone at the house. We were all going to be together for another night before we had to hit the road again. The place I’d bought because I had money to burn and my agent had encouraged me into buying real estate had never felt particularly homey. If anything, it had always been a crash pad or party house. But as I opened the door to the master bedroom, knowing Dani was inside, waiting for me, a sense of contentment settled inside my chest.

I shut the door and looked toward the bed, and that easy feeling started to creep away.

Dani’s suitcase was on the bed, open and half filled. It wouldn’t have surprised me if we were leaving bright and early. But we still had one more day, and my girl was not one to pack early. She was a lot of things, but organized wasn’t one of them.

When she stepped out of the bathroom with her toothbrush in her hand, anxiety started to prickle to life.

“What’s going on?” I asked. She opened then shut her mouth. “Dani?”

“I’m just packing.”

“Okay.” I frowned. “How about we finish this stuff tomorrow? Let’s get to bed,” I suggested and knew by the way she was looking at me with wide, sad eyes. My gut tightened.

“Is something wrong?” I asked, and I watched my sweet girl chew on her bottom lip. I sat on the bed next to her suitcase and pulled out a little lacy number I hadn’t seen her in.

“This new?” I asked and loved the blush that covered her cheeks.

“Maybe.” She shrugged. I extended my hand. Dani walked over, and I opened my legs, making sure she had space to sit on my lap. Whatever was going on couldn’t be so bad if she didn’t hesitate moving toward me.

One hand rested on her lower back and the other on her thighs, making sure I held her close. “Talk to me, beautiful.”

“Jax…” she sighed, and her gaze dropped from mine.

“Baby, talk to me,” I urged quietly, tipping her chin up until our eyes connected.

“I love you,” she whispered so damn softly I wasn’t sure if she’d actually said it or my hopeful heart had imagined it. I blinked, and when her bottom lip wobbled, my hand moved to cup her face.

“Dani…” My breathing was off. My chest rose and fell.

“I do. I love you, and I know that was not part of our agreement but?—"

“Breathe for me, baby girl.” I leaned in closer, dipping my nose down to brush it against hers. I felt her breathe in deeply before she exhaled slowly. “Good girl, just like that.” I praised. She took a couple of deep breaths, in and out, until her body was little more relaxed on my lap.

“Did you hear what I said?” she asked. A little fire flared in her green gaze, that perfect mouth of hers set in an adorable pout.

“I did.” I winked with a smile. My lips touched hers with a slow and sweet kiss.

“Jax,” she whimpered. My lips pulled upward. “Wait.” She shook her head and pulled back. “We need to talk. I need you to?—"

“I love you too, baby,” I cut her off, stroking the side of her face. It was time to lay it all out. “I think I fell in love with you when I watched you jump out of the back of that U-Haul when you moved in.”

“You did?” she asked wide-eyed. I obviously took her by surprise. Maybe I’d played my feelings a lot closer to the vest than I’d thought?

“I did. It’s why I couldn’t get myself to go on tour without you. The thought of leaving you back there, unable to see you talk to you on a daily basis, was killing me.”

“Is that why you asked me to marry you?”

“I needed to have a reason for you to say yes.”

“You could have just asked. We didn’t need to get married.” She giggled. The thought of not being her husband, of her not being mine, didn’t sit well with me.

“I love that we did. I love that you’re my wife. That I’m your husband.”

“You do?”
