CHAPTER53

SPECIALAGENTJASONand his colleague, US Marshal Kira Frisk from WITSEC, are standing in front of my hospital bed. She’s dressed in a black pantsuit and has notably small teeth.

When they first came into the room, they told Eddie they needed to speak with me alone. He seemed relieved to have a reason to duck out and told me he needed to head back to LA because of Sarah. I think our conversation upset him.

“We know why the Cadells were really after you,” Jason says. “Your mother.”

“Have you found her yet?” I ask.

They both look at each other, hedging.

“There’s no easy way of saying this …” he says.

My stomach twists.

“A tip came in that she was in northern California, near the San Geronimo Valley. There was a sighting yesterday,” he says. “But we just got word that remains were found nearby. They’re doing more tests to verify. The initial DNA results look like a match.”

“NOOO!” I wail out in agony. I’ve lost her all over again. A pain that knows no bottom.

“The sad truth is that if she hadn’t gone off the grid on her own decades ago and instead worked with us to enterWITSEC, this likely never would’ve happened,” Kira tells me, biting her lower lip with her small teeth. “That’s why you need to enter it. Even though it looks like your mother won’t be able to testify about Sally, the Cadell brothers still have another reason to target you. They believe Cristina Cadell gave you information about her mother’s murder.”

I look around the hospital room, waiting for Dr. Larsen to make another appearance. Tell me how I can turn my life around again like she did at Better Horizons and after my miscarriage. But she’s long gone, and I’m out of second chances.

“The bottom line is it isn’t safe for you to return to your life in LA,” Jason says.

“I’m not entering WITSEC,” I tell them.

“I know this is difficult,” Kira says. “But you have to consider other people in your life who you care about who might get hurt in the crossfire as the Cadell brothers continue to pursue you.”

Mom is gone for good. It seems Eddie is now too. He doesn’t want me in his or Sarah’s lives anymore. My worst fears have been realized.

“I don’t have people in my life who I need to worry about getting hurt,” I say.

“What about the guy who was just in here?” Jason asks me.

“What about him?” I say coolly.

Jason gets the hint.

“How about your patients?” Kira asks.

“I don’t know if I’m fit to be a psychologist anymore,” I say.

“Then what will you do?” she says.

“I’m not sure.”

“If you don’t have anyone or anything to return to in LA, then why wouldn’t you want to enter WITSEC and relocate?” she presses.

I think about how the Cadells have taken everyone I’ve ever loved or wanted the chance to love away from me.

“Because there’s nothing left for them to take from me,” I say.

“What about your life?” Kira says.

“What is a life without love?” I ask.

She and Jason look at me, perplexed.
