Declan smacks some papers against the back of my head as he walks by. Hiding my smile, tongue-in-cheek, I shake my head at him. I can’t quite figure out his game. We’ve been nothing but flirty since this morning.

It’s in his eyes. In his cocky smirk. He thinks I’m going to give in to his demands. I know he does.

My phone dings extra loud since I turned up the volume for such an occasion as this. I bounce my legs with excitement without making it too obvious as I reach for my phone.

I thought Mack might try to contact me today. We didn’t really text much after the initial “I’m home” message. If he was really planning on asking me to the lake house this weekend, then he couldn’t wait much longer than today.

Mack:My fairest maiden, some friends and I are going to the lake house this weekend. And since you’re my newest “friend” and all, you down to come? You’ll get your own room, I promise. Not that I’ll lock my door though. If you could just let me know by Thursday, I’ll make sure the fridge is stocked with the drinks you like.

Mack:Ps. Please say yes.

I purposefully look at Declan while I try to decide what to write back, biting my lip and smirking at him. He narrows his eyes in response, making it known he knows what I’m doing.

Me:Sounds wonderful! But uhm… will Declan be there? Because he’s giving me a death glare right now lol.

I slap my phone back on my desk and give Declan a satisfied smile. His own phone buzzes on his desk a moment later. He scrunches his face at me, mocking me with his smile as he reads the message.

I turn back to my computer, but he’s up and leaning against my desk a moment later. He drops his phone on the desk in front of me, showing me the message.

Mack:Lay off my girl! You’re gonna blow this for me, fucker!

He leans down further, invading my space. “First you won’t listen to me, and now you’re straining my relationship with my own brother,” he teases.

I pinch my lips together to stop myself from giggling. “You’re the one who inserted yourself into our relationship. How is that my problem?”

He holds his hands up in defense. “Woah, there! Slow right down. Relationship? Oh, no. The only Carver brother you will ever be in a relationship with is me.”

“Oh yeah?” I laugh him off. “And what relationship is that? The employee versus the arrogant consultant one?”

His mouth twitches up to the left side. “The one where I convince you to believe in love again.”

I’m slower to come up with a witty comeback because he caught me off guard with that one. He’s still using his flirty tone, but there was something serious in his words. He’s joking, of course, but why does it not feel that way?

I clear my throat to gather myself. “And how do you plan on going about that?”

He pushes up from the desk, standing straight. “By waiting as long as it takes until you’re ready.”

We lock eyes for a few moments. I open my mouth to speak, but no words come out. He taps the desk twice. “Can you work with Tad to make sure the check run is all set on your end by two o’clock? I’d like you to sit in on the trial audit even though it’s not technically your area so we can address any of the supply chain issues all at once.”

He looks down at me, waiting for an answer. I don’t have time to question this sudden shift in topic. “Uh… yeah. Okay.”

He walks out of my office area toward accounting, leaving me alone to question what he’s actually trying to accomplish with me. My phone dings again, so I open the message right away to distract myself.

Mack:It’ll be handled. I promise. I’ll take care of him. And awesome! I’ll call you after work to give you the details and write down your menu.

I love how he didn’t wait for me to give an official yes to act like I’m going. He was smooth at convincing me because I find myself excited for it. More than I’ve been excited for something in a long time. I’m just not entirely sure if it’s because of Mack or because of Declan.

Me:Can’t wait! I’ll be home around 6:30.

Chapter 9

“Stop.”

Declan cocks an eyebrow from his desk across from me. “I’m not doing anything.”

I shake my head, hiding my smirk. “You know exactly what you’re doing.”

My phone vibrates on my desk, breaking the tension between us. I glance down to see who’s calling, and my eyes flick back up to Declan with a huge smile on my face.
