He knows who it is before I even say anything. I answer on speaker phone. “Hey Mack, what’s up?”

“Mmm… your voice is so sexy. Can’t wait to see you tonight.”

Declan clears his throat excessively loud. “You’re on speaker,” he calls out, making himself known.

“Oh,” Mack sighs, sounding disappointed. “Hi Deckface.”

I giggle, entering into my flirty mode. “I’ve been counting down the minutes,” I tease.

Declan’s eyes narrow at me. “Do you need something?” he calls out. “We’re trying to work here.”

“Yeah, actually,” Mack says with a little extra attitude. “Forgot to grab marshmallows for the s’mores. Can you guys grab some on the way up? Whatever munchies too. I got the rest.”

Deck rolls his eyes. “We’ll go now if you hang up the phone.”

He ignores his brother. “Are you guys riding up here together?”

“No,” we answer in unison, our eyes locking with each other in challenge.

Mack doesn’t seem to understand that I’d rather be anywhere else in the world than alone in a car with this man. “Oh, really? Because I can drive you back home this weekend.”

“I’m coming up later,” Declan chimes in before I have the chance to even think of an excuse.

“What?” Mack asks, sounding almost outraged at that suggestion. “What the fuck, man? Why?”

Declan clears his throat, pulling at his collar. “I uh… I have an appointment.”

“An appointment?” Mack pushes. “I don’t believe that for a second. You have a date, don’t you? And you’re not bringing her up for the weekend either? Wow.”

I lean back in my chair, folding my arms over my chest and smirking his way. He gives me a mocking face back before answering. “You’ll survive a few hours without me. Relax.”

It isn’t lost on me that he never actually said whether or not he had a date today. Would he really though? I guess Friday is probably one of the most popular date days, but it’s a little ways up there to get to the lake house. There wouldn’t really be enough time to do much. I guess if he just took her out to drinks maybe? But then how would he drive?

I pause when I see Declan looking at me funny, probably not understanding I’ve gone through at least a million different scenarios in my head in the past thirty seconds. And for what? I don’t care what he does or who he dates. I wonder if she’s pretty. I bet she is.

Fuck, stop!

I speak up before I get lost in thought again. “I’ll go grab some on lunch.”

Mack groans. “I really meant for Declan to grab it. You’re my guest.”

“It’s not a big deal.” I try to play it off even though I’m really just trying to leave for lunch as soon as possible, so I don’t say something stupid around Declan like asking him about his date.

He somewhat relents. “Declan, I know you’re gonna step up and take this woman to the grocery store and buy her snacks in my absence.”

Declan’s face scrunches up, his jaw tensing like he knows he can’t say no to his brother. “Fine. See you tonight,” he says, leaning over to my desk and ending the call before I can even say goodbye.

???

“The flat ones are made for s’mores. It literally has the word s’mores on the packaging,” Declan argues back.

“No way! How are you even going to poke one of those with a stick?”

“I’ll poke yours,” he snarks back, rolling his eyes.

“The whole fucking point of s’mores is to smoosh the marshmallow between the crackers and chocolate and let it ooze out the sides. Where’s the fun in a pre-smooshed marshmallow?”

“These ones fill the whole cracker so you get marshmallow in every bite,” he says, getting closer in my face, trying to establish dominance.
