“Whatever, jackass. I’m bringing her to your little housewarming thing then. You’ll see. She wants me.”

“Whatever you say. Bring some guac too.”

Chapter 5

Mack

“The Operators? What is this?” I ask Derek, opening his housewarming “gift.”

He gives me that douchey laugh as he cracks open a beer and falls to the couch. “Trevor told me about your lady issues. Figured I’d help get you back in the saddle.”

I glare at Trevor, and he throws up his hands in defense. “Do I even want to know what this is?” I ask Derek.

“Phone whores,” he blurts out. I thwack the back of his head. “Ow, what was that for?”

“You’re an idiot.”

“What?” he cries, trying to remain innocent. “That’s what she told me to call her last week when I called.”

“You’re such a jackass,” I laugh, shoving the envelope in the kitchen junk drawer before anyone else sees it and thinks I bought it for myself.

He’s still a prick. Always will be. April broke up with him at the end of senior year, and it destroyed him. And I’m talking a completely shattered man. He didn’t eat. He kept missing work. We had to forcibly get him up for graduation. We felt bad for the guy, and now he’s been stuck with us ever since. Honestly though, the experience changed him. He’s still a tool, but now it’s something he reserves for his friends only.

Sometimes it takes losing someone to realize nothing matters without them.

“You guys are so fucking early. I haven’t even showered yet,” I say, walking back to the living room. “And I thought you were bringing Brooke?”

“She uh… she was busy,” Trevor mumbles.

“She dumped your ass already?” I ask with a laugh.

He shakes his head, letting out an exhausted sigh. “It doesn’t count as being dumped if you never actually were in a relationship.”

“That’s way worse, dude!” Derek interjects.

“Fuck you,” Trevor responds.

I laugh, taking a few steps back toward my room. “Can you fuckers answer the door if the pizza gets here?”

I walk out of my bathroom to my bedroom ten minutes later, shaking the remaining water from my hair. I turn the corner about to drop my towel from my waist.

“Jesus! Fuck!” I yell, startled finding Thea sitting on my bed.

She giggles like she thinks it’s the funniest thing in the world. “Relax, it’s just me.”

Just her? Just fucking her?

I whip around, grabbing a shirt from my dresser and pulling it over my head. I exhale harshly, trying to get a grip. She doesn’t even understand the ways I’ve imagined her on my bed.Jesus Christ, stop!

“What are you doing here?” I spit out more aggressively than necessarily.

She lowers her eyebrows like I’m dumb. “Hello? Housewarming party?”

I grab my jeans and walk into the bathroom to put them on. “You weren’t invited,” I call out to her.

Her smile is so fucking bratty when I walk back out. “Mm, and yet, here I am. Some things never change I guess.”

I roll my eyes, trying to play it off. I usually would tell her she could tag along, but I was trying to distance myself from her. I can’t think straight about these thoughts I’ve been having about her when she’s sitting there in front of me. My eyes fall down her bare legs in those too fucking short denim shorts.
