“Of course I’m serious,” I say anyway.

I try to turn away, but she grabs my arm, forcing me to look at her. “You want me to cover up like I’m not allowed to wear a bathing suit in front of my…”

She trails off suddenly, brushing her hair behind her ear and stepping back. I don’t let her. “Your what? Your boyfriend?”

“I didn’t say that!”

“Whatever, I don’t care if he is your boyfriend. You don’t need to be flaunting yourself in a teeny-tiny little bikini, especially not rubbing yourself all over him when he got here.” I realize I’m not even trying to be discreet anymore, but I don’t care. It’s Thea. I can tell her anything.

“Oh my fucking God! You’re impossible!” she shouts, throwing her hands up as she grabs the bowl of chips and starts heading toward the back slider.

“You’re being unreasonable,” I say, chasing after her.

She stops abruptly, almost causing me to run into her back. She turns and looks up at me. “Unreasonable? We’ve been out multiple times. For all you know, he’s seen and felt me fully naked on more than one occasion.”

“Jesus Christ!” I close my eyes, turning my head to the side, feeling like I’ve actually been smacked across the face. “Thea Marie!” I scold.

She rolls her eyes like I’m being dramatic. “You’re just fucking jealous.”

“Jealous?” I ask with a surprised laugh, unable to move because I’m not ready to tell her I want her more than anything.

“Yes. Jealous. You’re all sad and mopey about your one true love or whatever, so now you want to ruin everyone else’s happiness because you’re miserable and alone.”

It takes me a moment to realize what she’s even talking about since my head was in the complete opposite space. “This isn’t about Olivia,” I say.

“Oh no?” she asks with a laugh, not believing me.

“Thea…” I pause for a moment. “The love I had for Olivia doesn’t even exist when I compare it to the love I have for you.”

She inhales sharply, staring up at me. I want to say more. I desperately want to say more, but I miss my chance. She releases a long breath before breaking eye contact. “Well, you have a weird way of showing it.” She yanks the slider open and walks out before we can continue the conversation any further.

“Fuck yeah!” one of the hot, shirtless neighbors yells as Amanda smacks the volleyball over the net and scores the winning point.

“Yeah, yeah,” Trevor calls out to her from the other side of the net. “We could have taken you if we also had an all-state volleyball player on our team.”

Amanda leans against the pole that is holding up the volleyball net on the beach next door. “Didn’t Brooke play volleyball? Oh, right. That’s too bad she decided she didn’t want you again.”

“It was mutual!” he tries to defend himself.

Mack comes up and grabs his shoulder. “Trev, accept the loss. You’re making yourself look like a little bitch.”

“What the hell, man. You’re supposed to be on my side,” Trevor complains.

Amanda has already moved on from the conversation and begins flirting with all four of her teammates. The next door neighbors were having a party as well, and they invited everyone over to use their volleyball court. The suns almost setting nowthough, so I head back over to the firepit with a new drink in my hand.

John was heading out right as they started the game, so I ended up just watching the end. I wasn’t the only one on the sidelines, so it wasn’t overly obvious that I was staring at Mack the whole time. I feel guilty even admitting it to myself. How am I going to have my date leave and then immediately be gawking at another man? I’m the worst.

I drop down into one of the camping chairs next to Addison. She reaches over and squeezes my hand. “How was the game?”

“Amanda could have beaten them all by herself if she wanted to,” I joke.

“Oh? Was it Amanda that had you watching so intensely?” she asks, eyebrows raised like she knows exactly where I was looking the whole time.

“I don’t know what you mean,” I say even though we both know I know exactly what she means.
