“This?” I question with too much attitude. “What’s this?”

He shakes his head in disbelief, but before he can respond, Trevor interrupts. “Hey man, you ready to go? I told them I could pick up the couch at two.”

Mack looks at me one more time before nodding at Trevor. “Yeah, I’m right behind you.” He gives me a half smile. “I’ll see you later, Thea.”

Chapter 22

Mack

“Wait! Hold on!” Trevor calls out as he gets stuck at the corner of the hall. “Scooch back a couple feet. I need to readjust.”

We go back and forth a couple times until we get the couch around the corner. We set it down with a thud. “That was way more work than I was expecting,” I say with an exhausted laugh.

“You want a beer?” he asks, heading into his kitchen.

“God, no. I’m so fucking dehydrated. I’ll take some water though,” I say, grabbing a glass from the cupboard.

Trevor laughs at me. “Yeah, it was a pretty rough night for you, huh?”

I down the glass of water in basically one gulp. “We’re definitely not twenty-one anymore.”

“Speak for yourself,” he protests. “You doing anything today? Otherwise, you can chill here.”

“I was going to go straight to my bed and sleep until tomorrow,” I joke.

“I still have my second tv set up in my living room if you want to stay and play.”

As much as I want to sleep off this hangover, I know I’m going to be stuck awake, thinking about Thea. “Yeah, sure. I just need to go on a caffeine run first.”

“There’s some in the fridge or more in the garage,” he says, heading to the living room and starting up the game.

I grab a can and walk over to the new couch and plop down. “This is actually pretty comfortable.”

“I told you,” he laughs. “So what’s going on with you and Thea?”

My eyes pop open wide as I take a sip of my drink. I look away from him, grabbing my controller. “What do you mean?”

“That whole thing at brunch? What are you fighting about this time?”

I try to shrug it off. “No, nothing like that. She was just trying to get under my skin like usual. No big deal.”

He doesn’t buy a word of it. “You’re so bullshitting me right now. What is it? It’s this new guy she’s seeing, isn’t it? Do you not like John or something?”

“What?” I ask too defensively. “No, he’s fine. Seems nice.”

“Nice? Oh man, you hate him. Why?” he asks.

“It’s not that I hate him.” I do. “He’s just so…I don’t know. He’s too put together.”

Trevor leans his head back in surprise, keeping his eyes on the game. “Yeah, I thought that was supposed to be a good thing. A change of pace from the guys she usually goes after. I thought I could actually relax for a second and not have to worry about her.”

“I guess,” I respond.

“Dude, if there’s something you don’t like about this guy, I need to know. I’m not going to let him fuck over my little sister.”

Fuck, I’m digging myself too deep into this. “I don’t know. It’s just like he seems like the type to never stray from the plan. He’s got his life planned out exactly how he wants it. I’m worried he’s going to box Thea into what he wants her to be in his mind, and you know Thea. She’ll try her best to be that person for him. I just don’t want to see her get hurt when she doesn’t match this ideal he has in his head.”

Trevor momentarily glances my way. “Do you think you’re overthinking this?”
