Trevor points at the door as he’s walking out. “Make sure to lock this when we’re gone,” he says.

Mack nods in agreement. “Yeah, you never know who’s going to try to show up at your door.”

“Goodnight, boys,” I say, already shutting the door in their face.

Mack gives me one last smirk. “Goodnight, Thea Marie.”

Chapter 23

Mack

“Will that be all, sir?”

I nod at the cashier as she places the socks in a bag. “Thank you,” I say before I leave the store back to the parking ramp of the mall.

I’m already exhausted from this week at work, and the last thing I wanted to do was come shopping, but I always procrastinate on buying socks until I realize I don’t even have enough left to finish the week out. I’d usually just order some online, but I didn’t have time to wait for shipping.

I left town on Sunday for work on the east side of the state. K&R is one of our biggest clients, so I’ve been slammed in sales meetings for most of the week. So as much as I didn’t want to stop at the mall when I’ve only been back in town for an hour tops, I’m glad I’m finally done with everything and can go home.

I chuck the bag into the passenger seat and close my door. I’m about to start my truck when I spot a car that looks exactly like Thea’s parked a couple lanes over from me. Fuck, I can’t get her off my mind. Everything is reminding me of her.

We’ve barely been able to talk this week. I was working during the day, and she was working during the evenings. There’s been a few texts back and forth, but that’s been the extent of our communication. I wanted to call into her work, but she threatened to block me if I paid to talk to her one more time.

“No fucking way,” I mumble to myself when I see it was actually Thea’s car parked across from me.

She’s walking through the parking ramp, blissfully unaware I’m watching her. She doesn’t even realize how captivating she is doing the simplest of things like walking to her car. I grab my phone from the center console. I was planning on messing with her since she doesn’t know I’m here, but before I do, I notice a notification.

Operator Molly is online! Call now!

“Online? What the fuck?”

I glance up to double check my eyes aren’t deceiving me, and she’s really there in front of me. I open The Operators app and see I have a free call since I called so many times last week. Technically she said I couldn’t pay for a call.

I press the phone to my ear and hear the usual hold music as I wait. I watch as she grabs her phone out of her bag and opens her car door. I can tell the moment she sees it’s me calling. She looks annoyed at first, but nothing fills me with more joy than when I see the smile that follows.

“What did I tell you about calling me?” she answers. Her voice doesn’t even remotely match the look she had on her face a moment ago. Damn, she’s good.

“You said I couldn’t pay to call you. This call was free. Why the fuck are you online right now?”

“What?” she asks.

“You’re in a fucking parking lot. What if someone else called besides me?”

“Mm, you underestimate me. I’m very talented at my job. Wait, how do you know I’m in a parking lot? Are you tracking me again?” she asks, pulling her phone away from her face andlooking at her phone. I’m assuming to double check she isn’t sharing her location with me again.

“You look good.”

“Mack…”

“I like your flowery skirt. I’d like it more around your ankles.”

She starts looking around, but she doesn’t spot me yet. “Are you back in town?”

I decide to play her at her own game, ignoring the question like she always does mine. “Pull it up, your skirt.”

“Or what?” she asks, challenging me.

“Just because this call was free doesn’t mean I’m not expecting service. I’d hate to have to report this call to customer service.”
