“Did I do something wrong?” he whispers as he grabs the bowl I just washed and dries it with a towel.

“Yes,” I answer, not bothering to look at him.

“Care to enlighten me?”

“Nope,” I say, shoving another bowl into his hands.

He smiles, letting me know he’s not going to be deterred. “Let me take you out.”

I stop mid scrub, turning to him. “What?”

“Out. Like on a date.”

I glance across the kitchen where Trev and Declan are talking before looking back at Mack. “Oh yeah?” I ask sarcastically. “You going to drive me out of town to some secret place so your buddies don’t find out?”

He squeezes his eyes shut for a moment. “Don’t be like that.”

“I’ll be however I want to be.”

I try to turn, but he gently grabs my elbow, leaning down closer to me. “If that’s what it takes for you to stop being mad at me, I’ll take you anywhere you want.”

“I’m busy.”

He exhales harshly. “Busy with what?”

Trev walks over to us, saving me from this conversation. “You ready to go?”

Mack nods at him. “Where are you guys heading after this?”

Trevor gives a half smile. “Uh… we’re going to our dad’s. It’s his birthday.”

The word “dad” sounds awkward the moment he says it. Even Mack is giving him a confused look before he must remember that we go over to my dad’s place every year for his birthday. It’s a weird tradition me and Trev do like we can all just pretend to be a normal family for one day out of the year. It’s always a quick dinner and a see you next year type of vibe. I think everyone feels less guilty once we get the one obligation we are still holding on to over with.

“You guys leaving now?” Mack asks. “I’ll come too,” he says, inviting himself.

Trevor shrugs like it’s no big deal, and the two start walking toward the door, saying their goodbyes. Trevor goes to start the car while I put on my shoes with Mack. “What the fuck are you doing?” I ask him.

“What?”

“You know what.”

He shrugs. “I didn’t have any other plans this evening. Well, besides taking you out.”

“Stop that,” I whisper. “You aren’t invited to my family birthday party.”

He stands up straight, towering over me. “Why not? You’re at almost every one of mine.”

He’s not wrong. Dammit.

“That’s not the point,” I say.

He smiles at me, bopping my nose. “You’ll get over it.”

Mack

Thea’s still mad at me. I’m not exactly sure what I said or did to upset her, but I know we can’t keep playing this back and forth game. I just have to figure out a way to sit down and have an actual conversation with her.
