I look back at him, and he runs his hand along my jaw. “Don’t hide from me.”

“I’m trying,” I say, barely able to hold eye contact.

He presses a light kiss against my forehead. “I’m here when you’re ready.”

Chapter 27

Thea

“No fucking way!” Amanda squeals for about the twentieth time since we started this conversation.

I had to tell someone about Mack. I couldn’t keep it to myself any longer. Not to mention Amanda is already pissed that I took this long to let her know what was happening, and I haven’t even told her the most important part yet.

“Yeah, and…” I fade out, folding my hands together.

“And?” she asks, her voice all excited as she scooches closer to me on the bed. “And what?”

“We may have slept together.”

She stares at me with her jaw dropped. I cringe before holding up two fingers. “Twice.”

“You slut!” she gasps.

“Fuck,” I groan, falling onto my back on the bed. “I don’t know what to do.”

“What do you mean?” she asks, taking a bite of the pizza we ordered. “We both know you’ve been in love with Mack since you were like thirteen. Why aren’t you happy?”

“Because!” I say. “I don’t know. It’s not like real.”

“What do you mean?”

Saying it out loud feels too pathetic, but I don’t know how else to explain it. “It’s like a game or something. I don’t think he wants to be with me like…you know.”

She bites her lip, hiding her smile. “Like you want him in a big white dress kind of way, raising little baby Macks.”

“Shut up,” I say, laughing. I purse my lips before being truthful with myself. “Yes.”

“Well, have you talked to him about it?”

“I mean, no I guess not, but like we’ve known each other for so many years. Don’t you think it would have come up if that was something he was interested in.”

“You’re getting in your head,” she says, being the voice of reason. “You need to talk to him about it.”

“I know,” I sigh. “It’s just like…embarrassing.”

“How so?”

“Because he’s hiding me. If he didn’t want to hide me, then he wouldn’t.”

Amanda drops down next to me and wraps her arms around me. “Oh, sweetie. Maybe he’s just nervous. He’s been best friends with your brother for a long time. He’s been friends with you a long time.”

I sigh again. “I guess.”

“I still think you should talk to him about it, but hey, if any man isn’t willing to put you on a pedestal in the town square and show you off, then fuck him.”

I cover my eyes with my arm. “I already did.”

We both turn and look at each other before bursting out into laughter. She squeezes me tight again. “Well, on the bright side, I’ll love you until the day you die. Who else do we need?”
