I glance up at him with a smile. “Do you think that’s a good idea?”

“No,” he says. “But let me do it anyway.”

I nod, laying my head back down on his chest. “Do you think we should go back inside?”

“Probably.”

We don’t, both snuggled up on that tiny little makeshift bed in the treehouse listening to the sound of the lake until we drift off.

Chapter 30

Thea

It feels like a million knives are being stabbed into my brain. God, why the fuck did I drink tequila last night? Without opening my eyes I reach for the water bottle on the floor that I made Mack grab for me in the middle of the night last night. I was still half asleep so the memory is a little fuzzy. All I remember is waking up feeling like my throat was being rubbed with sandpaper, so I kicked him awake and told him to get me some water. He reluctantly got up, trying to get me to just come inside and sleep in a real bed, but I was already drifting back to sleep and ignored him.

I tip the water bottle back, chugging the remaining amount. I close my eyes again because the light is only making my headache worse. Mack groans, moving around until he’s cozied up against my back. He settles there, still breathing heavily like he’s still partially asleep. I push the pain aside for a moment, smiling as I relax back into him.

I grab my phone off the floor to check the time, but see Amanda texted me.

Amanda:I told everyone you went to bed last night, but where the fuck are you? Everyone is up for breakfast already. Did you guys go home or something?

Shit.

Shit. Shit. Shit.

I nudge Mack with my elbow, but he just groans, not wanting to wake up yet. I push him harder. “Wake up! Everyone’s awake already.”

He squirms, not opening his eyes. “I don’t want to.”

“Mack!”

I pause with a pillow in my hand about ready to smack it across his head when my phone rings, and I see Trevor’s calling. Shit. I hit the decline button to stop the ringing, but then I hear his voice outside the treehouse a few moments later.

“Hey Thea, did you and Mack take the kayaks out or something? Breakfast is ready and you weren’t in your room. Call me back.”

“Fuck,” I say, freaking out too much and accidently knocking over the chess set on the little table next to the mattress sending the pieces all over the floor with a loud crash.

Mack finally wakes up. “What the hell are you doing?” he asks, sitting up and rubbing his eyes.

“Shh…” I say, putting my finger over my lips, but it’s too late. I hear Trevor take the first step up the ladder.

“Hey, you guys up here?” he calls out.

Mack stares back at me with wide eyes, and I’m looking back at him the same way. Both of us come to the realization that there’s no explaining our way out of this when neither one of us has any clothing on underneath this blanket. My first instinct is to hide under the covers, but even that ridiculous plan is foiled since it only took Trevor about two seconds to climb the ladder.

“There you are. What are you guys doin-” Trevor stops mid word when his brain catches up to what his eyes are seeing. He looks from me to Mack, back to me, and then back to Mack again. “What the fuck is going on?” he yells, his eyes furious and his breathing erratic.

Mack tries to jump in. “Trevor, let me explain.”

“Hell yes, you’re going to explain. Down here, now,” he says, climbing back down the ladder.

Mack turns to me. “Stay here.”

“Like hell,” I respond, but he’s much faster at throwing his clothes on than me so it takes me a few seconds longer to get down the ladder.

Trevor is already in Mack’s face yelling at him. I missed the beginning but catch the tail end. “...behind my back! With my baby sister!”

I’m already annoyed and push even though I know this is the worst possible time. “Trevor, I’m an adult.”
