“Sorry, Odi, but it is what it is,” he says with a shrug.

“I fucking hate that saying.” I pause for a second, letting Kaiden’s words sink in. “People died?”

“Only eight.”

“Don’t sayonlylike that. Like it’s no big deal.”

“Sorry.”

“Was it anyone we know?”

He grimaces and it’s like the world stops turning.

“Who? Kaiden, tell me!”

“Noah,” he says apologetically.

Noah? Noah…it takes me a moment to place him. And I feel an odd mixture of sadness and relief when I do.

“Oh.” I’m a horrible person. Who feels relief when they learn that someone they know is dead?

“Sorry, babygirl. I know you and he seemed to hit it off.”

“We were just making the best of a bad situation…” I confess. It wasn’t anything more than that. So why do I feel sad? “He’s really dead?”

Kaiden nods.

“Shit.”

“Why don’t you message your friends if you don’t believe me that they’re okay,” he suggests gently. “And arrange to stay with one of them. Not Jess though.”

“What’s wrong with Jess?”

“Nothing. She’s just a bit…soft. Sheltered. I wouldn’t trust her to protect you.”

“I can protect myself.”

“Not the point, little doe. Not. The. Point.”

As I have no idea what his point is, I let it drop. No sense in pointing out that the girls all share a flat anyway, so I’d technically be sharing with all of them. He knows this. They know everything. He must just mean, like, don’t sleep in with Jess or something.

Whatever. It really doesn’t matter.

“I guess I’ll just go and get dressed then.”

“There’s spare clothes on the bed. Saint brought them over with the breakfast stuff.”

I stare at Kaiden. He’s in ripped jeans and a plain white tee which shows off his muscles in a way that makes my mouth water. Yeah, he wasn’t wearing that yesterday to go to that stupid meeting. I much prefer him dressed like this than in a suit. Even if he is mouth-wateringly gorgeous when he gets dressed up.

“Do I even want to know what the Pres of an MC who’s taken a shine to me might have chosen for me to wear?”

Kaiden’s answering grin is wide and shit-eating, filling me with dread.

“You won’t hear any complaints from me.”

Great.

I flip Kaiden off and head into the bedroom, closing the door behind me. Now that I’m sober, or not hallucinating from pizza-induced food poisoning or whatever, I can see that the bedroomis easily the nicest room in this place. The floors are still bare wood but there’s a soft navy and white striped rug protruding out from under the bed. I never really understood why people do that – have a rug in the bedroom only to hide most of it under furniture, but it does give the room a softer feel. The bed is solid wood and sturdy, with a carved headboard. It looks handmade, by someone pretty skilled actually. The bedding matches the rug in that it’s white with navy blankets tossed over the end, and the curtains – which are open to the midday sun – are also navy, thick and heavy. Which probably explains why I slept so late.
