“Nope, he didn’t call.”

“Then why all the fuss about making sure you’d be available?”

I didn’t know if she wanted me to answer. Hell if I knew what Michael’s play was, but I guessed he was trying to figure out a way to sway us to his side so we wouldn’t fight him on the hotel’s development.

I decided to put Grams out of her misery. The look on her face was so sad. She had looked so bright and cheerful a few moments ago. Now she looked like someone had run over her prized garden. “Grams?”

“Hmm?”

“He texted me.”

“But you said he didn’t.”

“No. I said he didn’tcall. Which technically, he didn’t.” I laughed when she realized her error.

“Of all the games to play!”

“Me? What about you?”

“I’m not playing any games.”

“The hell you’re not.” I chuckled. “Trying to be some damn matchmaker!”

“I just gave him your number so he could get ahold of you about the designs.”

“Mm-hmm. Sure you did.”

“I did.” She couldn’t look me straight in the eye, and I knew her trying to play Cupid was not even remotely innocent.

“And?”

“And, you seem mighty interested in them,” she deflected. “Just figured you’d want to see them for yourself. I know you’ll put your two-cents in, even if it is unwanted.”

“Well, don’t you care about what they build there?”

“Of course, I care, Siena. Don’t be foolish.”

“I’d think we have some kind of say-so, seeing as it’s right next to us. Don’t you? Shouldn’t our opinion matter a little?”

“Well. We might not have any right or say-so, but remember, you—”

“Catch more flies with honey than with vinegar,” I finished with her.

“Si.” She beamed, patting my cheek.

“I know, Grams. I’m just anxious it will overpower us and take away from the beauty of what we have here. What we see when we look out across this valley.”

“Are you sure it’s not more than that?”

“What are you getting at?”

“Just that . . . I see the way he looks at you.”

“Yeah, right!” I scoffed.

“And the way you look at him.”

“I look at him with annoyance.”
