“Well, you may not see it, but I do. I know that look.”

“Grams, I’m not even done with this whole Tim thing yet.”

“Maybe not yet. But you’re getting there.”

I sighed, leaning into her, “Why do guys suck so bad?”

“Oh,Cara. They only suck if they’re not the right one. The right man won’t make you feel that way.”

“How would you know? You’ve been with Pops forever.”

“Yes. But I’ve seen my fair share of the boys all you girls have dated. Trust me, that’s enough to teach a handful of women about finding Mr. Right. I may have gotten lucky with the first boy I fell in love with, but I’ve been there to wipe your tears. And Lauren’s. And Jenny’s and Audrey’s. Not to mention my friends too.” Her words reminded me just how lucky I was to not only have her as my grandma but as my friend.

Life wasn’t always easy. Not having my parents around to watch me grow up and help mold me was a hard fact of my life. But, in all honesty, I completely lucked out with my grandparents. They stepped in when needed and filled those gaps over time. While I could still feel a hole in my heart, I knew that over the years, that hole had shrunk as my life filled with their love, devotion, and support. They were the ones who taught me what family truly was, what true love really looked like, and what friendship really meant.

“Just remain open-minded. You don’t have to accept or agree with everything he says or does.” She cupped my hand in hers.

“It’s just so hard. On the one hand, their buildings are amazing. Gorgeous, in fact. But I just don’t think that one belongs here in Monarch.”

“We have no idea what they have planned. And we can’t control it. So why stress over something that is out of our hands? Hmm?” She cocked her head to the side.

“I know you’re one hundred percent right. It’s just so damn hard.”

“Let’s just wait and see what’s what when he comes over.”

I agreed, feeling a mixture of relief and defeat.

Twenty texts were waitingfor me when I went to my room after dinner. The girls were going crazy in our group chat over my impending meeting with Michael.I’m back,I sent as I considered the four outfits on my bed.

Lauren: What are you going to wear?

Me: Idk. I have a few ideas in mind.

I switched the black and red sweaters to see how they paired with the jeans I had chosen.

Audrey: Are you going for sexy or comfy-casual?

Jenny: Don’t overdo the makeup.

Lauren: Go for SEXY!!!

Audrey: Wear your hair pulled back and the black sweater.

Me: I had that as one of my top choices.

Jenny: Love it!!!

Heart and thumbs-up emojis followed from all of them.

Jenny: Send pics!

Their excitement was rubbing off on me. I wiggled into my favorite dark denim jeans and checked myself out. Damn, these jeans made my ass look awesome! I pivoted from side to side. Yep! Definitely needed to go with these.

I slid the soft fabric over my head, made sure my hair was in place, took a selfie, and sent it so the girls could see: Black sweater—not too revealing, but a touch suggestive with my skin showing. Tight dark denim jeans that showed off my derriere.

“Eat your heart out, Michael!”I sent, as I checked my reflection in the mirror one last time. I’d worn some sexy lingerie underneath, too, just to give me an extra boost of confidence. I smiled, imagining just how I would take Michael and his stupid building down as I hung up my clothes and got ready for bed.
