Siena seemed nervous as wetook our seats. She was a little stunned that I’d booked us first-class seats but commented, “Figures,” as she stowed her carryon. She was fidgety in her seat, kept looking out the window even though we were still on the tarmac.

Something was up. “You scared of flying?”

“No.” She pulled the shade down.

“Don’t worry. It’s a quick flight.”

She settled back into her seat. “I’m not scared of flying.”

I didn’t believe her. No one was this restless if they weren’t nervous. “We’ll be there before you know it.”

She peeked out of one eye. “I’m not scared of flying, Michael.”

“What is it then?” I sucked in a surprised breath and brought my hand to my heart. “Is itme? Wink-wink.” She didn’t laugh like I expected her to.

“No,” she scoffed. “Get over yourself.”

“Oh. Itisme then?” I feigned a lightheartedness I didn’t really feel. I knew I had to ask before we got too far into this trip. “Do you regret what happened between us the other night?” I reminded myself that her flirtations at the winery couldn’t have been just in my imagination.

She sat up, looked me in the eye and said, “It’s nothing regarding you. In a bad way, I mean.” The flecks of gold in her eyes melted away any sense of doubt I’d let creep into my head.

“Okay.” My body sighed with relief. I brushed my finger across her forehead and tucked a lock of hair behind her ear. “I don’t know about you, but I haven’t been able to stop thinking about what happened the other night.”

“Oh, hmm.” She tapped her chin with the sunglasses she was still holding. “The other night?” She stifled a giggle, trying in vain to appear oblivious to what I was talking about.

“Oh, really! Do I need to demonstrate it for you?” I looked around at the other seats nearby. Still empty, I noted. “There’s no one around yet.” I slid my finger down her neck to the base of her throat.

She laughed again, smacking my hand away, then sat back in her seat with a sigh.

“What are you acting so tense about then?” I asked, relieved it wasn’t me.

“Just a lot on my mind.”

“Your interviews?”

“Those, and . . .” She stopped.

“And what?”

“I don’t know.” She fiddled with her sunglasses. “It’s stupid.”

I shook my head. “Who cares. If it’s bothering you, might as well talk about it.” She didn’t answer, but I could tell she wanted to. “Spill it, Siena. What’s up?”

“It’s about my ex.”

“Oh.”Oh.

“He’s up there. And you and I are going up there. And—”

I cut her off. “Look, don’t worry about him. If he’s there, he’s there. There’s nothing you can do about it, right?”

“I guess so.”

“And you’re going for a potential job, not for him. Right?”

She twisted her fingers together. “Right.” She nodded. There was something about her answer that left me uneasy.

My heart raced. “Unless you’re planning on getting back together with him?”
