“Love the heels, babe,” he said, but still had to bend his knees to line up their bodies.

It couldn’t be comfortable for him, always making allowances for their height difference.

The moment he slid into her, a familiar internal hum of completion agitated her hormones. Both of them exhaled in the same tone of bliss. Her lips curled, but her laugh didn’t linger when he began to do his thing.

Saying his name, Tess pushed back, working to get them where they were going. Instinct moved her fingers to the center of her body. Before she could think to stimulate herself, Danny’s hand overtook hers, shoving it aside to massage her clit. The guy already had one powerful forearm supporting her hips, holding her up so her toes were barely touching the floor. He was a guy who liked to be in control.

The longer Tess stayed with him, the more she got to know the person behind the lazy first impression. He could cook, play guitar better than anyone she’d ever heard in real life, and liked to be in control. When it came to sex anyway.

He filled her with his need, driving in fast and hard, doing his bit to keep the promise of haste. Tess yelped and grabbed for his hand between her legs to stall it. Holding him tight, she panted out short breaths charged with her desperate agreement.

He surged into her, shunting her against the sink, dropping her hands and her hips at the same time.

Accomplishing anything after they were done was impossible. No point in trying. Bent over the sink, her forehead on her forearm, her eyes closed. She’d thought it was his eyes, being under his intense focus that immobilized her after they got off. But it wasn’t. They’d done it in various positions, all around the trailer, even in the office during work hours. Every time, afterwards, she felt weak, inside and out, like each time he was stealing something that she needed to exist.

The hard smack of his hand on her ass snapped her out of her daze. “Thought you were in a hurry.”

“Right,” she said, doing nothing as he pulled her panties up. “Hurry. Yeah.”

The cable was working again, so he went to his recliner, the one closest to the door that he always favored, and turned on the TV. Tess washed her hands and took her compact from the clutch she’d put on the counter earlier. Checking her makeup and flushed cheeks, nothing was too out of place. Not on the outside anyway. Inside she was still dizzy.

“Bring beer home,” he said, popping out the footrest of the recliner as he slouched into his familiar position with his forearm on his head.

“Beer?” she asked, putting her compact away.

“We’re almost out,” he said, slipping a hand down the front of his sweats.

“Sure,” she said, tucking her clutch under her arm. “Anything else?”

“Nah, I’ll order pizza… We’re outta that breakfast milk you like too.”

Coconut milk wasn’t urgent. It wasn’t exactly breakfast milk either, that’s just when she tended to enjoy it.

Bending over him, she put a hand on the arm of the chair, and he tipped his mouth her way to accept her quick kiss. Before she could stand up, he hooked a finger into the neckline of her dress and curled it to pull her close for a longer, slower kiss.

“Mm,” Tess said, drifting on the awakening of his kiss.

Moves like that were usually reserved for their bedroom. Memories of what had followed kisses like that in the past heated her mind’s eye.

“Shower the other guy off before you come home though, baby, huh?”

Surprised by his request, her eyes opened to find he was already looking past her at the television on the wall beyond the dinette.

Standing up straight, Tess didn’t know whether to be offended or reassure him she didn’t intend on sleeping with anyone else. From his obvious indifference, it didn’t seem that he wanted any guarantees. They’d slipped into living together with no major hitches. That was probably because they did their best not to step in on each other’s business.

Backing off, Tess said nothing else as she exited the trailer. Danny knew she was ensconced in her mystery, but never asked much about it. Never more than was necessary to prove he was paying attention to the fact she was talking. Tess didn’t mind dealing with it by herself. Explaining her history would take too long. And, in truth, there was too much she didn’t understand about the “why?” to convey it to anyone.

Danny wanted nothing from her. They didn’t get gooey and mushy. Their interactions were friendly, but it wasn’t like either of them had asked for or made promises.

Their relationship, if it could be dubbed that… association was a better description. Their association fit her. It gave her what she needed: a companion. Someone to stop her feeling alone. There was no jealousy or arguing. He wasn’t attached to her, as he’d proved by referencing her being with another man. With Danny, everything was uncomplicated.

Switching out of the relaxed mindset in the cab on the way to the bar, it was important to be vigilant. When engrossed in her work, her purpose was sure. The aim of going to meet Patrick wasn’t so clear.

She’d walked out on him the previous week. There was a chance he wouldn’t be waiting for her at all. If it wasn’t for her suspicions, maybe she wouldn’t have kept the date. She just had to know.

Tess and her mother had run from their lives dozens of times. So far, she’d been lucky that they hadn’t had to run from physical danger. None that she knew about anyway.

When the cab dropped her off, she experienced her first real dose of fear. It was a crowded bar; nothing could happen to her. People would see. People would hear if she screamed.
