“Do you see any flowers?” he asked Sundance.

He didn’t answer either.

Tucker was going to have to take a little walk. He looked back over his shoulder, judging his distance back to camp. He didn’t want to abandon Wynona up here.

“Come on,” he said to his best friend, and then turned back to base. He headed straight for Holden. “Hey, I want to go check on something. Can you keep an eye out here for a while?” He knew that he would say yes, but he still wanted to ask.

Holden’s eyebrows went up. He was clearly suspicious.

“I’ll explain later.” He hoped he wouldn’t have to. He was pretty sure Holden would be able to put the puzzle pieces together once Tucker came clean to Wynona.

Holden gave him a solemn nod. “You don’t have to explain anything to me, soldier. I’ve got this.”

Tucker thanked him and took off. He had no idea how long this little excursion would take.

Chapter 38

The moon was high andbrilliant in the clear sky, casting a white light over the whole forest, making it look otherworldly. It was well beyond beautiful.

She hadn’t seen or heard Tucker or Sundance for a long time, but she wasn’t worried about them. No news probably wasn’t bad news.

The night was unusually quiet, as if the full moon had soothed all the wildlife into a snooze; hence, she physically jumped when Tucker’s voice came over the radio. “Grab your net,” he whispered. “Head north by northeast.”

She waited for more information. She looked up to see Holden headed her way. “That’s it?” she said to Holden. “Just head into the woods?”

He shrugged. “North by northeast.”

As she went to her pack and grabbed her net, she said, “Is it a toad, do you think?”

Holden shrugged.

“Is it a toad?” she said into the mic.

“Why else would I tell you to grab your net?”

Good point. She fumbled to get her compass out of a side pocket. She hadn’t used it in a while. Then she shined her headlamp down on it to get a bearing.
