“Me neither.”

She laughed. “I can’t believe you’re Wolfgang.”

“I know, I’m sorry.”

“You don’t have to keep apologizing. So big, tough outdoorsman, Tucker Bridge, is actually soft and sweet and vulnerable and well spoken?”

“Please, don’t tell anyone.”

She tipped her head back and laughed, and then interrupted her own laugh with a gasp. She stopped walking and turned to face him. “That’s why you said the thing about vanity plates!”

He nodded. “Sorry, I was still trying to figure it out.”

She laid a hand on his chest, and even through his shirt and coat, it felt amazing. “Tucker Bridge,” she said.

“Yes?”

“Will you promise me something?”

“Maybe ...”

She laughed again. “Will you please go at least thirty minutes without apologizing to me?”

He nodded. “I’ll try.”

Chapter 40

When Wynona climbedinto the van, Martin gave her the closest thing to a dirty look that his friendly, easy-going self could muster. “What took you so long?”

“I’m sorry.”

“I was just about to go back and look for you. I thought something was wrong! I thought you’d gotten your foot stuck in a bear trap or something.”

She laughed as she watched Tucker’s truck drive away.

“I told you I was hungry!”
