She looked at him. “Okay, okay, I’ll buy you breakfast.”

“Really?” He was no longer upset with her.

“Really.” She started driving.

“Are you going to tell me what took you so long?”

“No, but I’m fine.” She wanted to keep this delicious secret all to herself, especially while she was still processing it. Although she really couldn’t wait to tell her mom.

“Hey, Craig got fired.”

“Really?” She was surprised. While he had obviously failed spectacularly on this mission, she knew he was a smart scientist, and she figured they just would’ve kept him out of the field in the future.

“I guess so. He just texted me. Well, he texted me last night, but I just got the message. I guess he threatened to sue or something?”

“If that’s true, that was a pretty stupid move.”

“Well, he’s a pretty smart guy in a lab, but his people skills can use some work.”

“Isn’t that the truth.”

“Do you think we’ll be back out here tonight?”

“Honestly? I think probably, but I don’t know. Every time I’ve tried to predict a decision, I’ve been wrong.” For example, she never could have predicted that she had been spending every night in the forest with Wolfgang. It was too bad. She could’ve had much better conversations with Tucker had she known. She sighed wistfully. It had probably all happened the way that it was supposed to. God was funny like that.

WYNONA DROVE OUT OFher way to take Martin to a café she had been eyeing since their arrival in Hill City. He was acting very grateful, but she wasn’t just doing it for him. She was so wound up that she knew she couldn’t possibly fall asleep anytime soon, and while she hadn’t announced it to the entire group, she was very hungry too. Usually she had some snack breaks during the night, but last night had kept her too busy for soup or trail mix.

They sat at a table by the window, and Martin looked out at the small town. “I can’t believe they call this place a city.”

“I have no idea why they do, but it’s really charming.” Of course, maybe she would find anything charming right now.

He was staring at her. “Why are you in such a good mood?”

“What? We just found a veritable knot of toads!”

“I think it’s more than that, but I’ll let it go if you don’t want to tell me why you lurked in the woods with the handsome hunting guide and haven’t stopped smiling since.”

She narrowed her eyes at him and picked up her menu. Her eyes had trouble focusing on the words, but she kept staring at it anyway.

WHEN WYNONA GOT BACKto her hotel room, she plugged her phone into a charger and then opened up the Date Out app. She wrote, “Good morning, Wolfgang! Sorry I’m so late in messaging you this morning. I had a pretty busy night.”

All Tucker sent back was, “Ha ha.”

She laughed and tipped her head back. “Should we move this to Snapchat?”

“I don’t know how to Snapchat.”

Of course he didn’t. “Well, you should, because you’re going to use it all the time to send me pictures of cool stuff you find in the woods.”

“Oh, I am?”

“Yes, you are.”

After a short hesitation, Tucker wrote back, “Okay. Tucker is downloading Snapchat. Wolfgang signing off.”
