As I washed the dishes and overheard Jax and Nico quietly talking, I let out a sigh of contentment. This was the beginning of a wonderful life for our coven. Nico owed Jax a lot more than some orgasms, of course, but Jax giving him a chance to make it up to him was a step in the right direction.

Today marked the end of their animosity. And I couldn’t wait to see what the future would hold for all of us. In the meantime, I didn’t mind giving them some alone time to figure things out.

My phone ringing with a high priority call interrupted my train of thought, and I snatched it up before it could announce who was calling. I didn’t want it to interrupt whatever Nico and Jax had gotten up to.

I half expected it to be Nimue, but instead, it was Demetri. I messaged for him to give me a moment. I threw on some clothes, though I left my hair down. Then I headed out front with Tempest at my side. As soon as the door closed behind me, I let the phone project its image in front of me.

“I’m taking the day off, boss,” I grinned at him.

“This isn’t a social call,” Demetri gave me a stern look. “La Cora and Cyrene escaped.”

I dropped to sit on the steps at the front of the Roost. “How?”

“It turns out their anti-magic manacles weren’t real, but beyond that, they had help. The agents who assisted in their escape were all killed, so we can’t be sure, but rest assured, we’re looking into it.”

“Let me guess… one of them was a bald-headed guy named Kev.”

“He’s dead now, but yes. Did you suspect him?”

I shrugged. “He said some things when we cross the containment wall, and I noticed some suspicious glances during the open-air interrogation, but nothing that seemed actionable. He was an asshole, but so are a lot of demon hunters.”

“We’ve gathered a great deal of evidence against La Cora and Cyrene, so once they’re recaptured, they’ll never go free again. Preta might even have them executed. I’ve given my support to that outcome.”

“What about any of their other loyalists? I doubt you killed them all.”

“We’re going to use the truth-seeker artifact on every single one of our agents to be certain of where their loyalties lie. You won’t be excepted.”

“And Preta himself? Will he be subjected to it as well?” I still wasn’t entirely sure how much I trusted the new chief director.

“He already has. He was the first to do it, to show what would be expected. And before you ask, he even told a lie about his childhood to prove the truth-seeker would burn him for lying.”

“So you’re sure he wasn’t in on the plot to free La Cora and Cyrene?”

“Beyond certain.”

I sighed. “If he’s truly against them, why won’t he reverse their decision about the vamps you have imprisoned?”

“We want to release them, trust me.” Demetri’s brows drew down. “But doing so right now, with all the recent upheaval, would only panic the regs. Reg authorities have yet to authorize their release, and doing so without their authorization… Let’s just say the political outcome wouldn’t be pretty.”

“Anything I can do to help?”

“Come into HQ tomorrow and swear by the truth-seeker that you didn’t aid La Cora and Cyrene in any way.”

I nodded. “I hate to hold that thing again, but it’ll be easy to tell the truth about those two.”

“As it is for most of us,” Demetri admitted. “They were corrupt long ago.”

“Has the Wildes coven already given their statements?”

“Indeed they have. We’ve had so many damning statements under penalty of the truth-seeker that the two fugitives will be lucky not to be executed on sight.”

“Good, at least they’ll be handled.” I got to my feet. “After tomorrow, you know I have my own loose ends to tie up.”

“We’re working on getting five other demon hunter covens outfitted with infernal antidotes as we speak. This time you’ll be going after the devil with reinforcements.”

“Don’t expect me to wait around for them to get their asses in gear.”

“You’re our agent again. Your coven is reinstated as a joint OIB/DHA unit again. You will wait.”
