“You trying to say I have you, you asshole?” I hiss, as I try to push him off of me.

“Is that what you want?”

“Do I want some egotistical jerk that is hot and cold every day? One minute breaking shit in his room the next claiming he loves me and then goes back to being an asshole—”

“I’m sick of them having you when I can’t!”

My voice falters and he stares down at me with both anger and sadness.

“Because unless you are here, princess, for any reason other than me forcing you, you’ll never really be mine.”

He sits up on the bed with his back to me and leans his head in his hands.

“I like them both, Ax,” I admit quietly as I sit up with my knees to my chest.

“I know.”

“But I like you too.”

He turns to eye me over his shoulder and I curse myself for being so tired that my emotions get the better of me. Tears threaten my eyes and I shake my head as if I could shake them away.

“And I don’t understand what I’m supposed to do with that. It seems silly to even think about when there’s so much going on and I haven’t even thought about if it ends—”

“When it ends,” he snaps.

“I don’t know what I’m supposed to do when it is all over.”

“What do you want, Katie?”

I laugh, shaking my head. “Like it’s that easy?”

He shrugs, waiting for me to answer.

I laugh darkly. “How about my mom to be alive. My dad not to have sold me. Doctor Thorne and those other guys dead—” I hesitate and stare at my bedspread. “To somehow not have to choose between you all.”

Ax turns to face me and shakes his head. “No one is asking you to choose, Katie.”

“What are you asking me then, Ax?”

“Not to bail on us when this is over. Not to run away from me. You’ve tried already a few times, and only stayed because you know we can protect you.”

I want to argue that he’s wrong but he’s not. It’s been my go to reaction to run away from them when I’m upset. Even tonight, telling them to all leave me alone while I shut down.

“How does this even work? Because if it doesn’t…”

“That’s for us to figure out. Not you,” he chuckles. “I just want to hear you say you aren’t planning to run after this is over.”

I chew my cheek fighting a smile. “Are you asking me to stay with you, Axel?”

“I’ll beg if you need to hear it,” he groans.

I grin. “That’s tempting—”

He cuts me off grabbing my legs and sliding me down the mattress towards him.

“Say it, Katie,” he says softly as his body hovers over me once more.

“I don’t want to go anywhere,” I whisper. “I want to stay here with you.”
