“And he’s still a piece of shit!”

“He’s all I have left!”

The car goes silent and I stare out the window to avoid their pity filled faces. I sound pathetic, wanting there to be a reason that he would do this other than just being a horrible person. Even bad guys love their kids, don’t they?

“No he’s not, Katie.”

I eye Ax who seems to be working to keep from screaming at me still. He says nothing else as he starts the car and heads back to the house. Eli tries to hold my hand but I keep my fists clenched in my lap. They follow me silently towards the third floor and I pause outside the bedroom feeling their eyes on my back.

“I just want to be alone.”

I shower and pull an oversized T-shirt over my head before heading to lay down. I stop short when I spot Ax sitting on my bed waiting for me.

“Go away,” I groan.

He doesn’t move or speak so I walk around to the other side of the bed. Maybe he will get the hint if I just turn my back on him and close my eyes.

But, of course he doesn’t.

“Nothing your dad could say, no explanation he gives, will make what he’s done okay.”

“I know,” I mutter.

“Do you!” He snaps. “Do you know how much shit he’s gotten you into? I’m up to my ass in bullshit trying to fix this mess—”

“I never said you had to! If you are so irritated then just—”

“Don’t even finish that fucking sentence,” he snaps and grabs my arm to turn me to face him.

“I’m just saying,” I hiss. “If you don’t want to then don’t.”

He chuckles as he shakes his head at me. “Why, princess, think you can fix this all yourself?”

“I’d rather try than deal with you being an ass because you are so mad at me about it all.”

His hand pulls my hair out of my face and he leans in towards me as he shakes his head. “I’m mad, princess,” he whispers. “Because I want this shit to be done with.”

My stomach twists and I nod at him but he grips my hair to stop me from moving my head.

“Don’t nod at me like you understand. You don’t have a clue.”

“Yes I do. This sucks. All of this.”

His thumb brushes along my cheek bone. “Yes. But I’m also selfish. I want to be done with this so that I can be done with you being here like this.”

My face falls and his hand grips my chin firmly.

“I’m sick of you being here just because I’m forcing you. I’m sick of you being here just so we can protect you. I’m sick of being married to you when you hate me for it.”

My thoughts jumble trying to keep up with my emotions. I push his hand on me as I turn away but he stops me once more by hovering over me and placing a hand on either side of my face.

“Go away!”

“What are you going to do when this is over, princess?”

“I— I—” I hadn’t even gotten that far with my plans for the future.

“Exactly,” he growls. “Why don’t you find an answer to that question before claiming you have no one but your shit father.”
