Great. I haven’t heard from him since he was removed as a proxy and my stomach twists.

“Speaker,” is all Ax says and nods at me to answer.

I don’t know why I listen, but I do.

“Hello?” I ask, as I hit the speaker button.

“You’ve been quiet the last few days. Want to explain yourself?”

“Just keeping out of trouble,” I say uncomfortably and find myself chewing my thumb nail.

“Try again, Katelyn Elizabeth,” he snaps. “I called to schedule your next appointment with Doctor Hufford but it seems he’s no longer practicing medicine.”

“Must have had a change of heart—”

“Shut the fuck up, I’m speaking.”

My stomach twists as I glare at my phone. I try to remind myself he can’t control me or hurt me anymore, but I know that’s a lie. I’m helpless and broke living in some stranger’s house. My dad definitely still has control of me.

“I’m done playing games with you. Here take this, I can’t deal with her.”

I frown as he seems to hand the phone to someone and I groan internally when I hear Mary-Mae’s voice.

“Sweetheart,” she sighs. “This doesn’t sound like you are moving in the right direction.”

“My bad.”

Asher covers his mouth to cover a laugh as Ax smacks his arm.

“Enough. I’m done with this. Your father has tried his way and frankly he’s far too easy on you. I, for one, have waited long enough for him to fix this mess you’ve caused.”

I frown at the phone confused.

“What mess?”

“All of it, you greedy little bitch,” she hisses and I grit my teeth to stay quiet. “We gave you plenty of chances to do things your way, I mean, it would have definitely been easier for me. How many times can you really screw up slitting your own wrists though? Honestly.”

My face pales.

“And now you're home and manipulating these doctors into thinking you are stable. But we know you, Katelyn. You are far from it. So, if you want to enjoy your little taste of the outside world, you are going to play my way for these next two years, and then you’ll take your little butt far away from us. Do you hear me?”

“Trust me, I’m counting down until I can take that money and—”

“Uh, no. This little delusion is done. That money was never supposed to be yours in the first place. So, when you get access, you’ll hand it over or I’ll make sure you never see the outside of those four padded walls again, do you get me, little girl?”

I turn my back on the guys, trying to stop the room from spinning. My chest burns and the black spots are forming in my peripheral vision.

“Doctor Thorne will be there in the morning to give you your monthly dose and if we return next week and you so much asbreathe the wrong way, I’ll be shipping you right back to Valley Hill myself.”

“He… he can’t… he’s not…”

“Excuse me?” She snaps. “Form words before I have the boys calm your ass down again.”

My legs tremble and I shake my head silently. “He’s not my doctor.”

“He is now.”

“He’s not allowed—”
