CHAPTER TWENTY FOUR

KATE

I dream of being trapped. Except this time it’s inside a college campus. The entire perimeter is on fire and no matter what I do, no matter what hall I turn down, I wind up facing flames higher than my head.

“It’s okay, wake up,” I hear and my head shoots around as I sit up in my bed. “Just me Kate, it’s okay. Just a dream.”

Eli is kneeling by my bed and runs his thumb over my cheek.

“Did I wake you?” I ask, feeling guilty that a nightmare has woken someone else up for the second night in a row.

Selfishly, I’m grateful that he is awake to wake me.

“Are you okay now? Want me to leave?”

No.

“I’m fine.”

He’s quiet for a minute and his lips tug up. “I don’t mind staying if you don’t want to be alone.”

I frown. “That obvious?”

He grins at me. “Practically begging me with your eyes.”

I laugh at him as I move over to make space. He sits on top of the blankets, sitting against the headboard. I hesitate for only a minute before laying my head in his lap. He pushes my hair outof my face and off my shoulder. His fingers brush my skin and my body explodes with goosebumps.

“Is this okay?” He asks as his fingers continue tracing lines up and down my arm and neck.

I nod my head, not trusting my words. It is more than okay. It clears the remnants of the nightmare from my mind and my stomach twists; reminding me of when we had gone on the roller coasters.

“Eli?” I say after the silence gets to be too much.

“Hm?”

“Do… do you think I’m a whore?”

His loud laughter catches me off guard and I sit up to glare at him.

“Are you serious?” He asks, shaking his head. “Why would you even think that?”

“Last night Asher…” I hesitate and my cheeks burn.

Eli just smiles at me. “I love making you blush.”

I give him a dirty look as my cheeks grow redder.

“Asher slept in here last night, I know,” he finally says. “Guess tonight it’s my turn. We are just sleeping, Kate,” he chuckles.

I hesitate and he raises an eyebrow at me knowing I have more to say. Fuck him for knowing me so well.

“What if I like both of you?”

“Guess I’ll be competing for some alone time,” he laughs.

I frown at him. That was not the response I was expecting. He laughs at my face and pulls me back to lay in his lap.

“Don’t worry so much. No one’s asking you to choose or take us both at once—”
