“Sex.” Ajax turned to him and leaned his forearms on the counter, bringing them closer. “We have sex, handsome.”

The first thing that came to Drake’s mind was his body. He was overweight, and Ajax had a body made by gods. Then again, Drake didn’t care. He was who he was, and if Ajax didn’t like it, then they didn’t have to seal the deal.

Ajax winked. “I can’t wait to unwrap you. You’re so fucking sexy.”

Talk about a stroke to his ego. Drake beamed. “So are you.”

“Just so you know, Kenji can hear us.” Ajax tapped his ear. “Shifter hearing.”

Now Drake felt embarrassed. He looked at the window and saw Kenji devouring a slice of the cake, but he stopped long enough to wink at Drake.

“I’ll go make him deaf if you want,” Ajax offered, though Drake didn’t think the guy was serious. He hoped not.

“Maybe for eating all the strawberry cake,” Drake said. “I didn’t get any.”

“Want some?” Kenji shouted as he pointed to the almost empty cake display. “There’re one or two slices left.”

“No thanks,” Drake said, though he hadn’t shouted. “Knock yourself out. You’re going to fall into a diabetic coma.”

“Can’t,” Kenji shouted. “Shifters don’t get human diseases.”

Drake’s jaw dropped as he looked at Ajax, who was finishing up his smoothie. “Is that true?”

“Yep.”

“What’s with you and your monosyllable answers?”

“I’m trying my best to handfeed you this information so you don’t have a meltdown. Too bad Kenji and Elijah aren’t that considerate.”

“Rip the bandage off,” Kenji shouted.

“He’s funny,” Drake said. So far, he liked Kenji. The guy wasn’t trying to be comical. It was just who he was.

“He’s irritating,” Ajax said. “If he keeps sticking his nose into my business, I’m going to line the next cake with rat poisoning.”

“Won’t kill me,” Kenji sang out.

“But I’ll make you sick as hell,” Ajax countered.

Their banter was helping to put Drake at ease. He wasn’t as scared to be around them anymore. The two seemed like really nice guys, for men who weren’t even human.

“Is this mating thing permanent?”

“Yes.”

Drake groaned. “Stop with your one-word answers, Ajax.”

“Yes, it’s permanent,” Ajax said as he set the smoothie down in front of Drake.

“And what if I’m unhappy? What if I want a divorce?”

“Shifters don’t divorce,” Ajax replied, once again leaning his arms on the counter.

Kenji walked inside, bringing in the empty cake display. Drake didn’t even see a crumb on the dish. “If he makes you unhappy, call me. I’ll beat the brakes off of him,” he said. “And don’t think I’m joking. A shifter’s number-one priority is to keep their mate safe and happy. It’s a code we live by.”

Drake looked at Ajax, but the guy wasn’t smiling. “He’s serious.”

“Yes.”
