Just then Drake heard shouting. He turned, as did Gage, and saw Roman storming out.

“You can’t just walk into my fucking house!” Brody said as he came to the door. “I don’t know you, and you’re making a cup of damn coffee in my kitchen. I’m calling the cops!”

“Consider yourself lucky you’re related to Drake,” Roman snarled, “or I’d teach your rude ass some manners.”

“Whoa!” Gage took off toward the porch. So did Drake. Brody had no idea who he was up against, and Drake had never seen his cousin this livid.

Gage pushed his hands into Roman’s chest as Drake inserted himself between them. “What the hell are you doing, Brody?”

“You know this guy?” Brody glared at Roman.

“Yes, and I told him to go inside and make himself something to drink.”

“You should have warned me,” Brody huffed. “I walk into the kitchen to find a stranger making himself a cup of coffee. What was I supposed to think?”

“I already told you, calmly I might add, that Drake was just outside,” Roman snarled. “You got a fucking smart-ass mouth.”

“So do you,” Brody argued, his chest so close to Drake’s that his cousin could have knocked him over at any second. Brody was larger than Drake, more muscular, while Drake was short, plump, and could easily be shoved aside.

“Just go inside,” Drake demanded. “Brody, just go into the house, now!”

There was a goddamn shifter and fairy behind Drake. They could do some serious damage to Brody if they wanted to. Even if Brody had no idea what a fairy could do. Gage had said he could send Brody halfway around the world. This was so fucked up.

With his lip curled, Brody stalked inside and slammed the door.

“You don’t know how badly my leopard wants to maul that son of a bitch,” Roman bit out. “Just say the word, Drake, and I’ll end your problem with him.”

“I want my cousin to find his own place, not end up buried in a shallow grave.” Drake wiped his face, wishing the day was over already. “Please, while I appreciate your concern, could both of you just leave?”

“Are you sure?” Gage glared at the house. “You kicked him out, and he hasn’t left. I could make him leave.”

“You’re one of my very best friends,” Drake said. “I cherish our friendship, Gage. All I’m asking is that you guys leave and let me handle my cousin.”

“Fine.” Gage crossed his arms. “But I’m telling you now, if he disrespects my mate again, all bets are off. And if he even thinks of disrespecting you, I’ll turn him into a toad.”

Could Gage really do that? Drake shook his head as Roman and Gage walked away. Drake dropped onto the step and sighed, wondering how his day could get any worse.

Scratch that. He honestly didn’t want to know.

Drake pulled out his phone. He really, really wanted to hear Ajax’s voice right now. He dialed, put the phone to his ear, and looked out across his lawn at the houses around him. He was surprised his neighbors hadn’t come out to see what the commotion was all about.

“Hey, handsome,” Ajax said when he answered.

Just the sound of Ajax’s voice settled something inside of Drake. His anxiety lowered. His breathing evened out. His heart slowed the fuck down. It was like he’d been in a raging storm and now he was floating along in calm waters.

“Hey.” Drake bit his lip, unsure what to say, though he wanted to say a million things.

“What’s wrong?” Ajax asked, concern in his voice.

With a sigh, Drake told him what just happened.

“Do you need me to come over?”

“I just needed to hear your voice,” Drake admitted as he ran a hand through his hair. “It’s anchoring me.”

“Anything you need,” Ajax said. “What do you want to talk about?”

“Gage told me vampires and demons are real.”
