“I…” Maceson grew quiet.

Kenji gritted his teeth in anger. “Save your breath, Maceson,” he snarled. “Because I promise you, I fucking promise you, that there will be no place you can hide from my wrath if you try to play more games. I will hunt you down and rip out your goddamn throat.”

“Don’t threaten me, Kenji,” Maceson sneered. “We could have been great together, but you ran away like a coward. Whatever you have coming is what you deserve for breaking my heart.”

“You don’t have a heart,” Kenji countered. “The only person you’ve ever cared about was yourself.” He gave a humorless chuckle. “But thanks for letting me know you were a part of this plan to end me.”

With that, he hung up and tossed his phone onto the couch. The silence that followed felt heavy, a weight on his shoulders that he couldn’t shake. He knew he had to stay vigilant, that danger was lurking around every corner.

Kramer had to know about Kenji’s plans to help Desmon seize power. Maceson must’ve gone to Kramer and helped him track Kenji down. It was the only thing that made sense.

As he paced the small living room, he thought about Tido. A human, cared for by a werewolf like Kenji, and yet he showed Kenji nothing but kindness and understanding. It was enough to make him question everything he thought he knew.

Kenji’s own kind had tried to kill him. A human had turned Kenji’s world upside down with those big innocent eyes and adorable ways.

As he continued to pace the room, Kenji felt a strange sense of unease. The idea that a human could be so kind to him, a wolf shifter, was almost too much to bear. But Tido’s kindness had touched him in a way that nothing else had in a long time.

For the first time in a long while, Kenji found himself wanting something more than survival. He wanted to feel that sense of belonging he had always longed for.

And now he had a mate.

“Kenji?”

He turned at the sound of Tido’s unsure voice.

“Why are you out here pacing?” Tido moved closer. “Is there more trouble?”

Kenji pulled Tido into his arms and hugged him tightly. “Yes, Tido,” he admitted. “But you don’t need to worry about it. I promise I’ll keep you safe.”

Tido wrapped his arms around Kenji, clearly understanding the gravity of the situation. “I know you will, Kenji,” he whispered softly. “You’re my new best friend, and I trust you with everything.”

Kenji looked into Tido’s smoky gray eyes, seeing the depth of their bond in his gaze. “You have no idea how much your words mean to me, love.”

“So, what’s the plan?” Tido asked as he pulled away. “Do we go after the trouble or fortify this house? We’re a team, right? Do you think I need a weapon?”

His mate seemed a little too eager. “Slow your ponies.”

“Why?” Tido asked.

He explained his phone call to Maceson.

“You think your shitty ex-boyfriend had something to do with this?” Tido began to pace. “How do you want to retaliate? He sent a demon after you, Kenji. You can’t let that slide.” He stopped and looked at Kenji. “Do you know any demons or vampires you can send after him?”

Kenji threw his head back and laughed as he hugged his mate. “Who knew such a vindictive person lived inside of such a small package? You seem so sweet and naïve.”

“Sweet, maybe. I’m not naïve, though. I might have grown up in a small town, only dated two men prior to mating you, but I’m definitely not naïve.”

“Okay, wrong choice of word. Innocent?”

“Possibly, but I’m fully aware of dangers. I might not have known your world existed, not entirely since I always questioned seeing that guy turn into a lion, but I know the world is a dangerous place.” He grabbed Kenji’s hand and led him into the kitchen, where he poured them both a glass of orange juice.

“I’m starting to realize there is more to you than meets the eye.” Kenji accepted the glass and took a sip. “What I need to do is talk to Ajax. He used to be my alpha before he left the pack.”

“Then let’s go talk to him.”

Kenji smiled. He loved how involved Tido was in this. “It’s four in the morning, hon. I think it can wait another three or four hours.”

“If you insist.” Tido took a seat next to him at the table. “Honestly, I’m not that brave. But I’ll be brave if that means defending you. I wasn’t lying when I said you’re my new best friend, just don’t tell Drake, Elijah, or Gage I said that.”
