Kenji crossed his heart with his finger. “Your secret is safe with me.”

Tido slid out of the passenger’s side of Kenji’s SUV, ready to go inside with his mate, as Drake walked out of Bluebird Café, grabbed his hand, and yanked him toward his car.

Kenji stopped and looked at them.

“It’s daylight out,” Drake said. “There’re no shadows for a demon to use. and vampires can’t come out right now. Unless Ajax was lying about that.”

“I’ll be okay,” Tido said to his mate. “I’ll be in when Drake is done with me.”

With a hesitant nod, Kenji walked inside the café.

Tido looked at Drake. “What do you want?”

“What do I want?” Drake looked incredulously at Tido. “A demon tried to eat us yesterday.”

“He didn’t try to eat us,” Tido argued. “He attacked Kenji, and Elijah turned the hose on him.”

Drake chuckled. “I still can’t believe Elijah did that. If you ask me, it was a smart idea. Too bad it didn’t work.”

Tido grinned. “Now that the danger has passed, it was funny.”

What wasn’t funny was that Kenji was in danger. He had never met anyone like Kenji, and he knew he never would. His mate was one of a kind—in his eyes at least. His heart swelled and his body ached every time he glanced Kenji’s way.

Tido looked past the large front window and saw Kenji and Ajax talking. There was no way he could ever allow Kenji to face things alone, not when Kenji had woven himself around Tido’s heart in such a short period of time. Tido might not be brave, but for Kenji, he would do his damnedest.

“You got it bad.” Drake elbowed Tido’s arm. “You should see the look in your eyes.”

“The same look you have whenever Ajax is around?” Tido teased.

“Whatever.” Drake blushed. “I just wanted to know if you guys figured out why that demon came after Kenji.”

Tido scowled. “His bitch-ass ex-boyfriend.”

Drake’s eyes widened. “Seriously?”

He told Drake about what Kenji had told him. Tido wasn’t sure he should say anything, but Drake was one of his best friends, and he wasn’t hiding anything from him.

He’d grown up with Drake and Elijah, had made friends with Gage just a few short years ago. Before everyone was mated, they’d been inseparable. Now they’d added Julian to their inner circle. He wasn’t going to hide this from any of them.

“Damn.” Drake gave a low whistle. “And I thought Alan was being a pest. He’s got nothing on Maceson.”

“Tell me about it.” Tido glanced back toward the window. Kenji was looking his way. When his mate winked, Tido felt his face erupt in heat.

“Come on.” Drake grabbed Tido’s hand like he was a kid to drag around. “We need to find out what those two are plotting. I’m all in, whatever it is. No one messes with you and gets away with it.”

Chapter Seven

Ajax had a feeling he would be getting a visit from Kenji. He also had a feeling he knew what this was about. Since he’d landed in Midnight Falls, Kenji and Ajax had talked a lot. Ajax knew why his friend had left the pack, about Maceson, and that Kramer was as useless as ever.

If Ajax were a betting man, he would put his money on Luther being behind all of this. The man was nothing if not calculating. He would see Kenji’s departure as a betrayal, which was ridiculous. When Ajax had been in charge, people had left. It happened. Not a big deal.

Things were different now. It was as if the past was forgotten. The way Ajax had run things, his kindness, understanding, and empathy had been washed away with cruelty and selfishness.

Now Kenji and Ajax were seated at a small table in the back corner of the café. The air was thick with tension, but there was also a palpable sense of respect.

“You know why I left”—Kenji paused, taking a deep breath— “but there’s more. I know you had your own shit to deal with, and that’s why you left, but once you were gone, I became lost and confused and unsure if I fit in any longer.”
