Did he have a wife I didn’t know about?

Her eyes drifted to me and remained warm as her smile widened. “I didn’t know we’d be having company,” she said, extending a hand.

I didn’t bother to take it as I looked between them with raised brows.

What he’d done in the alleyway—the way his lips had moved against mine…

How could he have done that when this woman was waiting for him?

The pit in my stomach yawned open as I considered how I’d kill him. Usually, I opted for quick efficiency, but this time…I’d make it hurt.

“Sienna,” he said, pressing my back slightly. I took a single step forward, but I didn’t give any other acknowledgment. “This is my house manager, Lucia.”

House manager.

We had a few household staff at our family home, but they never greeted us with wide smiles. If anything, they kept their eyes downcast and did their jobs. We didn’t speak to them, and they didn’t speak to us.

“Uncle Dante,” a smaller voice screeched as a young girl rounded the corner. With all the speed of a D1 football player, she sprinted toward Dante and dove at him, arms open. He swung her around and propped her at his side, giving her a brief kiss on the cheek. I didn’t miss the way he partially shielded her body from me.

“And this is my little Bria.”

I gaped at him. Then, I took in the little girl who bore a slight resemblance to him. She had light brown hair and hazel eyes, but her nose held the same shape as Dante’s. Her lips were a similar shape.

“It’s…nice to meet you,” I said dully as I tried to figure out the relationship.

Uncle?

Did Dante’s brother live here with them? Would I meet him tonight? Adding another family member to the equation made my job riskier, especially if they worked closely.

I considered all the reconnaissance I’d done on him. The Guerras were notorious for keeping their businesses and dealings close to their chest, and in the month I’d spent tailing him, I’d learnedjustenough.

Valentino had given me the documents of familial information that he’d recovered. It’d said: a father in prison and no known siblings. No family at all. But it hadn’t been all-inclusive.

The Guerras didn’t let people close to home.

Dante was a mystery in many ways, and his family was the most secretive thing. He had to havesomebody, but I’d never learned who. Neither had Valentino, apparently.

Moreover, I’d never been able to get an accurate reading of the members of his household—not when the entire block shared an underground parking garage. I could never see who came and went, only that he never had another person in the passenger’s seat of his car when leaving.

I’d learned a lot of his habits and businesses in the city.

I’d witnessed a few of his allies and the soldiers he worked closely with.

I’d watched him pulverize his enemies on the streets.

Despite all of that, though, I flew into his household blindly. I ground my teeth together as I tried to assess the situation.

Lucia stepped forward. “Can I take your coat?” she asked.

I didn’t bother saying anything as I removed my coat and tossed it to her. Her brows rose in surprise as she caught it and took a small step back. I looked her over, wondering why she continued standing and staring at me.

“Thank you,” I finally said as she continued staring at me.

Confusion danced in her gaze as she tucked my coat over an elbow and continued staring.

“Lucia lives here alongside us,” Dante said. “She cooks, cleans, and does most of the childcare while I’m away.”

Bria rested her head on Dante’s shoulder as he spoke, looking content in his embrace.
